Cardiff Carnage is one of my favourite tourneys of the year and (by my crappy maths) is 99 days away. The painting scores at Cardiff are pretty strict, and ive been looking around and none of my current armies and none are at a standard I would be happy with, and would get the majority of the painting points available.

On a related note, and has been well publicised, I very drunkenly bought a brettonian army on eBay last weekend. Which led me to think....

"can I paint a 2200 army in 99 days, which will get me the painting points that I want???"

So, this log is my effort to do it... I had really wanted to go for the multiple-coloured bret army which I'd always wanted to try, but common sense got the better of me and I've gone for an achievable black and red scheme. As Cardiff also requires a fluff submission I'll be asking for advice from the creative among you on that as we go along!!!

I hate painting horses, so I started work on basecoating 9 knights of the realm horses last night to break the back of the horrible stuff first! I'll try to put the incredibly dull pics up tonight!

Wish me luck!!!

Steve, you have the attention span to armies of a retarded chipmunk. I love it!  :))

I've spent the last two weeks trying to finish painting 6 Horses.... I wish you the best of luck!
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

Dear lord you are near scitsophrenic when it comes to armies. I'm expecting elite level hand painted flur de le patterns on all the horses and individual tabards and heraldry

The only way I got through the horses for my DEs with sanity intact was by spraying them black and slapping a little bit of grey on for the detail. I don't envy you all those tabards!

Are your lizards going in the bin already? Hope it wasn't just the traumatic experiences with ushabti and mountain chimaeras that put you off them  :))

p.s. I'll stop mentioning ushabti soon

Undead Dan

Good luck Steve, good choice not going for the skittles colour scheme!

Thanks chaps... I don't find the prospect of the horses that scary really as there is very little actual horsey to paint! The tabards should be fairly straightforward and quick and are the sort of thing that can really unify the army if I pull it off.

Tom - not much in the way of personalised heraldry I'm afraid. The errants will have the bog standard heraldric device of the duke, the realm/pegs will have an additional symbol (tbc what though), the quest will have a crusade cross, on top of that, and the grail will have, Erm... A grail!!! they'll all be cumulatively added, showing the progression of the knights through the lords household (while being quick to do!)

Jack - at least they won't be able to stomp me anymore!!!

So far my horses have just been based and washed, so look crap... But hopefully it will all start to come together soon!

Yeah, if you paint the Barding well, it doesn't matter if the horses are just base + wash as they aren't noticed first.

Also if you paint the Red well, Steve, noone will really notice if you just basecoat/minimally highlight the black either. Its the most glorious thing about Black... Some nice time saving tips for you...

A good wash on your horses to draw the shading on the flesh together I find really helps get you a natural blend.

Thanks chaps... I'm treading a fine line between what can get done in 3 and a bit months, and what I really want to do to make things look awesome. Sure a compromise will have to be met at some stage!

Agree with you on the black james... I pretty confident in highlighting black, and I tend to prefer it over highlighted rather than under to get a bit of pop, but you are definitely right in saying that's an area I can save some time on...

One area that will take a lot of time is the pegs... In the fluff I believe that all pegs are White - which is going to take ages!!! :(
