Thanks for the input Dave, really appreciated!

I also have warmachine and 40k projects on the go so there's plenty of variety. My main problem has been rushing from one tournament to the next, getting tons done, but never to the standard that I know I can come up with.

Ol - the thought of doing another Orc army, my fourth, is a bit horrifying but I'm sure I could make it work... There are definitely other things on the list that excite me more though!!!

Lee - yep, all interesting, as i know you have found though you can put a lot of effort into a lot of models and not spend many points with empire!!!
In the style of Tom Hale... F*ck Ushabti!!!

If you can face doing them again, I would say orcs and goblins. You've got the new book for inspiration, and plenty of different themes based on the various tribes. Plus cool big models with conversion potential.

If the thought of sticking another spider together makes you want to shoot yourself, I would say from personal experience my favourite models to paint are dark elves - mixture between big beasties and good infantry models.

I think, if you're going to do your next army as a full painting/conversion project, you need to have an idea as well as an army. Any other ideas from people for themes?

My rough themes were:

Slaaneshi beastmen
Uber low-tech stirland empire
A brettonian quest to find the lady
Night goblin horde
Dark elf khainite madness
Winter themed zero forest spirit wood elves

Dark elf cult of pleasure? You could really go to town and go for a fallen high elf prince and his court, mixing models from both HEs and DEs.

wood elves.  I'm finally getting around to mine.  In 12-18 months they will have a new book and then they'll be nails, I tell you, nails. :))

My main problem has been rushing from one tournament to the next, getting tons done, but never to the standard that I know I can come up with.

This is exactly the same problem I've had.  I very much want to have 2 armies up and ready and available to play at any time (having done 18m with just dwarfs).  To that end I rushed to finish my WE and have them ready to an 'acceptable' standard, but not where I want them to be.  I also have the lizards which are now incredibly close to being finished to a usable army size and standard.

Once that is done I will never sell myself to less than 2 armies (actually I plan on never selling an army and building a new one until I have all 15).

There are two competing factors:
1. Needing to finish an army for a tournament
2. Having no motivation to paint without an end tournament target.

So I have removed issue number 1 and I've made issue 2 quite simple because my WE are now fully basepainted and washed and the only work on them is fun stuff - highlighting up to a good standard and adding 'quality'.

So what I need to decide now is do I want to keep playing the WE out on the tournament scene if I am going to treat them as a quality painting project.  If your aim is to get on that best painted table your best chance is to bring an army nobody has seen before to a tournament so it has the combo of 'looks good' and 'ooh new and shiny'.  If you're not bothered about best painted then ignore this and play with it and just improve it as you go, but bear in mind most of the top armies out there are people who sink a couple of years into the painting, so you'll be playing them for a long time.

Of these themes I've seen the night gobbo horde done a few times, seen the winter woodies, though maybe not without trees of any kind (plus it'll suck on the table and piss you off no end :wink;m::) and the bret quest is pretty standard as are the empire.

So if going for unique that leaves:

What makes the beastmen slannesi - just  a paintjob or do you plan on converting in some daemonette bits and boobyworms/fiends?

What goes in the DE list
Cauldron (dur)
Hashishins (less common these days)
Execs (not great in game and I'm not a fan of the models)
Witch elves (had my hands on these models recently, they are very nice)

What makes ups your core - xbows, spears, corsairs and dark riders.  How are you going to khane them up?

That's always my thought process if I'm looking at a painting project.  What makes this different and cool.

Damn you I now want to go and paint my WE better, wait that's a good thing, thanks!

Tough one, IMO it depends what you want to do. Brets have tons of painting opportunities, beasts maybe more modelling?
I'd say stear clear of the woodies.
Yes, they're ok, new book due etc, but finding things to convert is a massive pain!
Ive got mine on the back burner. Am going to save up and get a unit of orobros wolves for eternal guard, and hope they get good in the new book!

The Trampoline

I voted for Empire, they were the army that got me into the hobby which I played as a teen throughout 5th (when they were poop) and throughout 6th (with the occasional dabble with dark elves and vampire counts) and into 7th before switching to high elves then dark elves.

The Stirland theme sounds good and with the amount of kit bashing available due to the large number of plastic kits you can probably make a unique looking force. The Empire heraldy book should help give you some ideas, also bright greens and yellows will help bring attention to the army compared to a darker colour one than can be appear drab 9like my current dark elves.)

I think the problem with a Stirland empire army would be much the same as what I'm facing with my Empire; so many troops!
