Annie

I don't suppose this could be stickied by any chance?

Right basically, an intro.

Most of you reading this probably know me, at least via internet if not from drunkenly shambling around a tournament somewhere. My name is Annie, I have been playing for over two years now, solely with VC, and I don't know... anything! I'm determined this year to get to grips with it, but I have a few things in my way, mostly my short attention span, my impatience, and my horrific memory. Oh also my Stubbornness.

The problem is I don't know much about other armies, and until recently, didn't really ask much for fear of people thinking I was stupid, therefore in a bitter circle of never getting better.

I'm posting this here because I know if I did on TWF or somewhere I'd get a load of jocks trying to assert masculinity by ranting at me exactly what I should do and making me feel a bit crap about it. Here it's mostly Ol being a ranty jock, but I have a special machine I can attach to my laptop which filters it out in calm rational advice so I have that covered.

I am a bit afraid that shocking embarrassing things will come out that I don't know, but I am willing to humiliate myself in order to get better!

Right so this will be composed of 3 elements.

1- Armies. I'll put it directly in the second post. My ever growing list of armies and notes and specifically how I can deal with them with vc. Built upon advice but mostly through games. This will be updated regulary from my little black gaming book.

2- general advice and questions. I will put my inane obvious questions here and you can help me without judgement!

3-battle reports. yeah.

So lets do this!!

LIST OF ARMIES AND WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THEM

EMPIRE
Seal of destruction: destroys spell as well as dispelling
Speculum: Swaps stats with a character in a challenge, beware! Usually on arch lector, maybe on chariot, keep aware from tooled up lords.
Demigryphs – not magical – spirit hosts good.
Loads of buffs from arch lector, 6" range. Hatred?
Steam tank crap in combat but loads of impact hits.
HIGH ELVES
Flames of the phoenix – a bit like curse of years be careful
Sheild of Saffry – 5+ ward
Curse of arrow attraction – rerolls to... hit?
Ring of fury, 2d6 S4 hits, an item.
reaver bow - magical shooting
Elves very squishy, just need to get into combat.
Crypt horrors push forward, but beware of flaming shots.
If there are dragons beware of leaving a gap at the front of the bunker that it can flying charge into!!
There is an item that can give magical attacks to a unit, can go on a character or hero – re wraiths etc
They can destroy items with Vauls Unmaking
Dragons - declare challenge with champ, then it will be killed and the dragon can't attack
OGRES
Keep ghouls, and any infantry or erm, anything away from the mournfang cav, they'll go through in a turn. Zombie speed bumps, chaff, units of wraiths/hexwraiths to lock down.
Put zombies in lines revealing flank to redirect, the overrun is 2D6 so they'll have less chance of getting into units behind anyway, and if they do it's my turn so I can buff the hell out of them first.
The dragonhide banner, is usually taken with the mournfang, it has a horrible breath weapon and can reroll ones. Breath weapon only used one I think though.
The Spell Trollgut gives them a 4+ regen, DISPEL THIS.
Spine Marrow – makes them stubborn
Hellheart is an arcane item that makes every wizard miscast within a 5D6 range. Not very nice.
Gnoblar Trappers – make a dangerous terrain test on all models going in on the charge
Sabretusks – grim, very low points, can character snipe very easily. Be aware of gaps they can get through to bunker etc. Chuck ethereal at it or scream or missle. Low leadership (7) usually away from generals bubble
Leadbelchers – can't stand and shoot as they're slow to fire
Maybe ghouls into the ironguts as the greatweapons mean they're striking last, so you get a bit of a go, wheras grave guard are going to be simultaneous
Maneaters are elite and are really horrible. They can scout, snipe, and other things. But it must be declared at the start of the game.. I think.
Buses usually have all characters in the front so you can't even attack the unit..ffs.
I tried a wraith flank and grave guard front double team into the death star, but that was in regen/helm days.
I don't know to beat them?!?!
ORCS AND GOBLINS
Curse of the bad moon is a bit hard on my army, especially ethreals.
Foot of gork MUST be dispelled! Bang bang bang
DON'T UNDERESTIMATE FANATICS! They have now killed a black knight bus and a grave guard one due to my stupidity. What is the range, 12? Send chaff in first to release them, or just ignore all together. Remember they can send through their own units.
Orc biguns – frenzied? Have to overrun, easy to redirect and flank with something like graveguard
TOMB KINGS
Snakes – bad. Chaff them up
Chuck ethereals into big monsters and push the rest forward?
WOOD ELVES
Annoying!!
Lots of little units scattering and getting out of charge range or line of sight.
Keep chaff back as they will just get shot at
Most stuff gets shots at! Just keep going forward in a block invocating the wounds back making sure nothing is killed too much. Try to get heavy units like crypt horrors in there and overrunning in a good line, not redirected out of the game.
Need some offensive spells really.
Be aware of them declaring flees to get me all over the place
Flaming banner, a LOT of shots then into one unit.
BSB special bow of thing, one use.
Treeman have a kind of shooting attack strangleroot
VAMPIRE COUNTS
VC vs VC
Don't forget about spirit hosts! One managed to kill a varghulf, not cool.
Buses – just chaff chaff away and maybe get flank or rear.
Yeah you can't bet ogres! I managed to get a 1-19 (to him) against one once!

Love the idea Annie. Look forward to hearing the results!

My theory so far has been chaff them up and try really hard not to get in combat with it, which has worked okay... Otherwise I also have had no luck vs the Gutstar... Probably Pit of Shades/Purple Sun to get the unit down first then go in maybe?
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

Yeah was just if they get here, what to redirect to, maybe to ghouls then to flank with GG or something...

I'm only runing vc lore at mo, feel I should try some more, just where to put all the points!

I think the first thing to do Annie would be to post your current list, so people can look at your army and work out what "threats" you have.

I have found the ogre threat unit wise comes in from 3 things, impact hits, stomps and their other attacks, i've had success by cutting off at least one of these, if you can cut off two, then you're laughing.

Annie

Here's my list for EDGT end of the month, can tweak it for SCGT but only slightly purely on what I can get painted in time.

I'm determined not to jut fall into any kind of recognised "bus" or netlist or whatever. I want to use crypt horrors because I like them, and they kill stuff. I cant see the viability of fitting a 500 point vampire into this, id rather troops done the killing. I just feel a bit like the Grave Guard suck a bit without the regen.. meh who knows.

Hey Annie. Will attempt to pass on what little knowledge I have.
High elves and ogres are what I know best. But please don't take this as gospel!

Elves very squishy, just need to get into combat.
This is very true. High elves was potentially a fantastic match up for me with the old ogre book. Everyone went before me anyway so asf didn't matter.
For vamps it's all about the grind.
If you loose the combat it doesn't matter, as long as you're killing some a turn, plus there may be a turn they fluff.

One thing to be wary of is units like sword masters that can grind very quickly, or lore of life, in which case they can come back to life too.

High elves have access to all lores, so flaming sword for +1 to wound is there too.

Crypt horrors annihilate everything, killed a unit of white lions which was pleasing.
I'd be careful here. Depending on unit sizes white lions should chomp through big gribblys. Sword masters too if they survive.
Your sheer number of attacks and stomp should help, but vs white lions for example, for each crypt horror you've got there'll be around 5 attacks coming at you, rerolling to hit and s6. Sword masters it's double at s5, ws6.

if you're running 3x3 then white lions will pump out 17 attacks, hitting on 3s with rerolls wounding on 3s. do crypt horrors have any form of save? if not math hammering it out comes to 9ish wounds, that's 3 guys. now if you get 3 hitting back, ou should do 3-4 wounds, plus 2-3 from stomp. it doesnt take much to swing this though.
if they've been flesh to stoned, flaming sworded, timewarped (i wish there was something else that gave +1 attack) then odds start to swing against you very much. Same is true the other way, but youre still not likely to go through them in 1 round.

If there are dragons beware. That's all you need to say!
Only joking, they're not that horrible of you know how to deal with them.
High elves won't have the really nasty dragon in 2400. If you can challenge out round 1 with something cheap. Champion is ideal of course. The guy on top will probably be tooled up to the max, while the dragon is t6. So it's a hard call to say who to hit, usually better to go for the rider.

They can destroy items with.. something. A spell
There's an item for a 1 shot of the spell too.

Over all, glass cannon.
The elite stuff can punch like a ton of bricks, but it's all very squishy.
Beware the level 4 with out a ward. He probably has an item combo that makes him ethereal but your magic weapon mundane. He may accept the challenge from your red fury asf vamp, meaning you can't hurt him or the unit.

If you can pick the fights, bog down the elite stuff with cheap crap like zombies then go for the soft squishy centre of his core choices. 600 pts every high elf player wishes he didn't have to take. Although of they're mindrazored then they are quite tasty. Fight in an extra extra rank (so 4 usually) asf and s8.

In the ogres one I think the sabertusks LD is only 4 if that's what your scream comment relates to, or was that just ogres generally?

Pretty much everyone is still struggling with ogres from what I've seen.  My only consistent solution has been death magic, Generally I start with the 2 24" snipes and the you've got the leadership debuff (good with screams) and the S&T debuff (good for unit vs ghouls) and then purple sun as my fall back 'nothing else is working lets monkey 6 dice and hope I get lucky'!

I know VC have access to death but don't know if it's that helpful in the list against other opponents so possibly a bit to specific for your needs.

For your O&G tactics they don't like facing ethereals
the Mangler squigs and fanatics die if a unit stops on top of them, which ethereals can do without taking damage so allows you to kill them without resorting to a bunch of your own stuff dying.  Also the army doesn't have a lot of access to magic attacks - magic spells and characters weapons are the only 2 I can think of so another bonus to the ethereals.
