I think the DE Dragon build is hands down superior to the lvl 4 one under SCGT comp. You can still fit in 2 lvl 2s with Sacrificial Dagger for the max magic and max shooting as well as taking a Dragon, so I think it's the right choice.

The only bad matchup is probably 2 cannons, STank, but I don't know anyone who is taking Empire to Impfest. Interestingly however, the 2 top DE players at SCGT had lvl 4, lvl 2, Dagger. Any DE experts want to explain why?

Match-ups/ability.  The level 4 doesn't suffer from the issues that dragons do against cannons etc.  You'll notice that at SCGT there were also 2 empire players right near the top.

The Dark Elf dragon list will aslo have issues with some other builds.  I can see Skaven given them kittens too when you have a WLC and a doomwheel that can take it off in a single turn easily enough.

The Dragon build is very tough, but it suffers from some bad matchups. Empire are hard work, especially with 2 cannons and a steam tank. Vampires are also tricky - the dragon is not able to go anywhere near the main battleline without having to worry about Vanhels and finding himself stuck against a block.

Interestingly enough I found Skaven to be a fairly good draw for the Dragon list (I would have loved to have faced them at SCGT!). Only one WLC allowed, which can be beaten in combat very easily by harpies/dark riders. The Dragon ought to break a DWheel in one round of combat, so it would never get the chance to zap. The furnace unit is also very easy to redirect and grind out if you get it in the flank.

The sacrificial dagger on the level 4 is just horrific though - with a potential 5 stabbings a turn that's an almost unstoppable magic phase! I think that is what won it at SCGT, letting them blast away gunlines, and not having an obvious 600pt model to target.

I faced the 3rd place DE army (Tom Hall) in my last game at SCGT, which is apparently an almost identical list to the winner. He had a stronger shooting phase than me with a rending star assassin and lifetaker, and I was also unlucky to have my Lord shot off the dragon by a single bolt, and the dragon fail its monster reaction.  If it hadn't been for a certain 25pt item his magic would have destroyed me as well...
