Lovely stuff - very jealous of the speed at which you paint!!

I'm painting classic Dwarfs!! PbN Update 146

Awesome job mate, the difference before and after once you have done the matt varnish over the dip is amazing. Is it really easy to do washes, highlights on top of the varnish?

Dave

Ol, Yeah totally, that's the great thing about matt varnish it gives the perfect finish to apply washes over the top off.  Gloss sheds washes but matt seems to hold them really nicely.

Matt - I'm usually a really slow painter, it's just the stuff I've been doing recently I've been using as many 'quick cheats' as possible to cut down my painting time.  The dwarfs were painted properly but the colour pallette was stripped right back to about 6 colours and liberal use of washes applied.

The Lizardmen are a basecoat and dip with only the bases getting much effort put into them.

The skaven I clearly set out the steps to show just how little care and effort I was putting into these in order to get them on the table top.  The real trick with them was the careful colour choice so that I knew they would take the dip well and I could cheat on the basecoat by not bothering doing half the model and it would still look ok once a couple of washes were applied.

This one isn't an OG purchase so shouldn't really be in this blog but figured you all nice nice shiny models.  I picked a box of Malifaux stuff up all the way back at Tempest Rising in May.  This then got one model painted up pretty much instantly and then 8th Ed dropped and I focussed on churning out stuff to get a decent army on the table.

If you've not seen or heard of Malifaux it started out around 2005 but before that the guy was just making figures that he thought were cool.  They then got incorporated into the crews (armies) in the game.  It's a skirmish game so 5-10 figures in a crew so you don't need a lot to play it and it uses a card deck rather than dice which is what attracted me to it as it's just a completely different mechanic.

There are 5 factions - Guild, Arcanists, Neverborn, Resurrectionists and Outcasts.  The one I've picked up is a guild crew - The Witch Hunters (there are about 3-5 different masters for each crew, apparently it's a bit like Hordes/WM in that respect).

So the first figure I did was a bit of an experiment with colours I don't use very often, some source lit eyes, blood on the sword and a desert base.

And last night I started on the crew Master, I got really into painting her so got a load done and I'm really happy with how it's coming out.

Surprisingly before I started painting her she was the least appealing model in the box but once I got started I really got into the painting of the robes and trying to get my yellow to work right which I think is starting to come together nicely.

Still got the skin & hair to work up and a few other bits and bobs plus the big sword which goes on her back needs attached but I'm loving painting these figures they're just a little bit different from everything I've been doing for fantasy which is a real pleasure.

Wow, she looks great Dave. You totally nailed the yellow by the way, it actually manages to look nice and shiney like silk in that photo. :1st:

You'll also have to give me detailed instructions on the Red hair once you're finished. Its one thing I've never really found a satisfactory recipe for.
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

Great to see someone else getting into Malifaux. Awesome paint job on Sonnia - the blue and gold cloth really works on a very magicky master. Also I've never liked the Witchling sculpts, but you've really managed to bring out the character of the model. Love it.

What's been done on the hair so far is a couple of really thin coats of dark flesh (over a white undercoat) followed by a light amount of devlan mud just to give it some depth.

I've done red on dwarf beards before and as with most things the key is to not actually paint it red but just use shades of brown.  Avoid using white in the highlights as it just turns pink.

Dunno really I'll let you see it when I'm done and you can decide if you like it or not!

For me I saw the witchlings and instantly loved them, there was just something about the posing of the sculpts and the cowled warriors that just jumped out at me and went twisted magical ninjas.  I then got the rules and hey guess what, that's pretty much what they are!  The sculptor did a great job of putting a lot of martial arts posing into them which I think works brilliantly. Looking back I'm now not a huge fan of how that first one looks.  I really want the image to say 'we've got it under a robe because you really don't want to see what's under there'. So there is no flesh on show and you only get to see the glowing eyes which is the suggestion that it's something a bit magical.  I think it would probably work a bit better with a darker colour scheme but now I've done Sonnias robes there is no way I'm not finishing the crew in this style.

Between the two models I can see night and day progress on the quality of my blue and yellow so hopefully I can carry that across onto the next Stalkers I do.
