Yeah I agree too, despite it being simple I still don't how you get it done so quick. I think I just get distracted lo... oh is that an ice cream van?

Simple but very effective, Dave. I think you chose a good colour for the bases to break up the brown, too.
This is the only reaon the army works at all.  Anything with a hint of brown and it would be an amorphous lump.

Dave

Oh and as to the speed of painting.

They were airbrushed brown just before I headed off down to Tempest 3 last Friday.  I then generally had an hour before and after work each day where I just sit and slap the brush at them.  Maybe a couple of hours last night/this morning and they're done.  The real reason is there is so little actual painting to them and only 4 colours (5 with the wash) one of which is sprayed on the entire model anyway.

Aaaah, Dipping = awesome sauce :)

Looking very good mate and making me think of my Mordheim warband...
"Sanguinius. It should have been him. He has the vision and strength to take us to victory, and wisdom to rule once victory is won. For all his aloof coolness, he alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood. Each of us carries part of our father - Sanguinius holds it all." Horus

And back to some Ol purchases:

31 Saurus with HW & Shield.  Focus on painting these is minimum effort, maximum painting points (per Call to War painting requirements!).

A bit of highlighting detail on the crests, shields.  Plenty of shading all over (dip).  3 colours minimum (Red, Metals, Bone).  Based & painted (assume I'll get the points for textured despite the fact there has been no sand/static grass added). Neat painting (all paint by numbers stuff where it should be) and consistent.

The level of painting on them is shockingly minimalistic.  Spray white, spray red.  Vallejo Bright brass on the metals, dheneb stone on the bone crest (shield & base painted seperately). Dip (B&Q Walnut). Crest highlighted with dheneb stone, bleached bone, white& small amout of bleached bone.

Shield painted dheneb stone, drybrushed bleached bone, drybrushed 50:50 bone:white, metals bright brass. Ogryn flesh all over.

Bases - Desert sand, highlight 50:50 sand:white, highlight upper edges straight white. Sides painted scorched brown.  Wash with gryphone sepia.  Any broken earth bits painted scorched brown, washed with dark angel green diluted down to wash consistency.

Working on the principles of shield, base and face (bone crest).

With the bases and the bright helmets, you will probably get away with a lot, as they stick out so much, a good method to get round the painting nazi's (we seem to have at the moment in tournies)

Hey I'm all for the actions of the painting police.  They're all for a better minimum standard and nothing to do with top end painting.  When I play I'd much rather face a nice consistent looking army which the player has painted everything because they want it to look like an army than someone else who has borrowed x to use with their force because it is the best thing to use under given comp system at the tournament and the two totally mismatch against each other.

As soon as the painting police step beyond that minimum standard as per the Call to War pack (where the police first came to the fore) I'll be there throwing firebombs with the rest of the masses.

CTW requirement was 5 categories for 4pts each, none of which are difficult to achieve (as this army proves).
1. 3 colours min - Tick
2. Neat - Tick (this army is entirely paint by numbers)
3. Shading/highlighting - Tick (dip counts, they've stated as much)
4. Based with sand/flock - Tick (don't think it even has to be painted, though letter of law mine isn't but suspect it'd get the points)
5. Cohesive force - Tick (ie it's all the same colour and the basing all matches).

So per their rules it's a 20 pts army.  Obviously some other systems it'll lose points for the detail like teeth and eyes not being picked out but sod it, good enough for now.

On the whole Bases, shield and faces thing.  It's basically what Ben Johnston used for his multi award winning skaven and before that his empire.  The difference is the Skaven have a couple of hooks in the yellow/blue scheme which is uncommon and the bright metals again unusual for that army.

Hey I'm all for the actions of the painting police.

I meant more about the moaners, not the judges, per se, hence I set up the new thread....

Having moved away from Malifaux figs for a while I came home last night, sat down at my desk and had 1 undercoated fig in my drawer which decided to grab my attention.  I'd bought the Austringer a while back and of the two models vastly preferred the crouching guy who was pointing.  But I'd not had the heart to come up with the new scheme for how my guild guards would look.  Well that all changed last night and as usual with Malifaux models stopping painting was a real issue!

I decided the guards were going to be the most civilian of all the Guild, so where the Death Marshals and Witch hunters have a very distinctive scheme that wasn't going to be the case for the guards, they'd look very much like my image of Joe Public in the world.  So based off that cowboy stereotype they roughly follow I settled on denim trousers, white shirt and brown overcoat.  I then played about with the hat, gloves and boots for a bit before settling on making all three the same grey/black colour which I'm very happy with.

Pic so far is a wip, the falcon still needs a bit of work and probably could do with a highlight or two on the grey just to give it better definition but so far I'm really happy with how it's coming out.  Not going to be able to work on it any further tonight but hopefully get some time later in the week.

Looking back at the cloak I probably need to add a little green into my shadows to get the transitions a bit more natural.  I'm quite happy with my denim, not really tried to do it before and wasn't quite sure how to approach it.  Ended up I painted it a base grey which has a slight blue tinge and then stippled up with a brighter blue before giving a grey wash followed by an asurymen blue wash.

I'm somewhat tempted to buy lucius's box so I can crack on with getting a complete crew of guards but I've already invested in Zorida as my first branch out of the Guild so will have to paint that up before I'll allow myself to get anything further.

Denim looks great - maybe I'll still that technique for some lounge gear for my Elves!!!! The hawk looks great too, always tricky getting "natural" animals to look right, there's a bit more leeway with monsters!
