As I said, I'm not allowed to start buying the models til the rats are done, but I can start dreaming anytime

Chop, chop then get painting!  :wink;m::

One thing I really want to do with my next 2 projects (Space Elves and these guys) is come up with some interesting basing.  The Stirlanders will be on 'evil' forest bases, as they're supposed to be in Sylvania.

And yep, that scan would be very helpful, thanks!  As I said, I'm not allowed to start buying the models til the rats are done, but I can start dreaming anytime

One thing you could look at would be charms and wards for the soldiers, typical protections against supersistious fears (handy when fighting the Undead).

Send me a PM with your email and I'll send it across tonight, or tomorrow.

Shh Matt, I'm in Scotland for the next few days, explaining a modelling kit with paints, knives and pliers would've been a quick way to spend my holidays in a cell at Gatwick instead!
On twitter @tomfeattom - I talk about my band, rock climbing, baking and am sometimes funny*.

Poor excuse, you can take paints on the plane - they can even go in your hand luggage as they are less than 100ml each. Join the mile high painting club!!

Oh woe is me, I have become...gamey.

Not very, I hasten to add, and only in a "Ha!  Tricked You!"  kinda way.

To make sense of the above, rewind the previous 7hrs, and myself and Jonno are setting up to play some Fluffhammer(tm).  The plan was to play low points (1200), random scenario and move the terrain about a bit to keep it interesting.

I think Jonno may be planning an actual battle report (he took a lot of photos) so I won't go into lots of detail except to reveal my new ULTIMATE CUNNING PLAN TO KILL WIZARDS (patent pending) which, to my great surprise, actually worked.

Pointless tangent - One of those things that annoys me about magic (feel free to flick back a few pages if you're feeling fuzzy on the details) is that Skaven, whilst having a horrifically broken repertoire, only have 2 Lores (and no Lore attribute) to choose from.  If you're an Empire player (as I will be), the world's your oyster - pick a new Lore every week and revel in a true smorgasbord of 6 dice game enders.  Dark Elves?  Well, you can pick from 3 or 4 shades of evil.  High Elves?  Anything you like, and have some extra dice, no really, I insist.  The new Warriors Lore Attributes look fantastic as well. Jealousy, thy name is Tkaic.

Back on track - I also hate multiple wizards.  I've ended up playing Mike a lot in the campaign which is mainly a good thing, as he's a nice chap to play but slightly rankles as he gets to pick out a team of wizards a la Avengers Assemble, with a couple of lvl 2s to back up a lvl 4, all on different flavours of pain.  And my run in (ruining?) against Sami's Banishment Party Posse still causes my left eye to start tic'ing erratically.

I've tried a few Anti-Magic precautions - Dispel Scroll, Obsidian Amulet, hiding power dice - but this time decided to go on the offensive...cue Hex Scroll.  Against a lvl 2 you've got a 2/3 chance of turning him into a frog and then, in true Skaven style, deliver a quick coup de grace with either a Rat Swarm (5 attacks so long as one base is alive) or a Rat Dart (narrow frontage to reduce incoming attacks whilst putting out 6 of its own).  So an investment of 123 points (to give two chances at having one of the kamikaze ratties ready to pounce) to (a) maybe kill a wizard and (b) get to go Ribbit Ribbit a lot.  Sold!

Turn 2, Jonno casts Iceshard Blizzard with his lvl 2 (Heavens).  Tom plays scroll, wizard goes Ribbit Ribbit.  Rat Swarm charges against the amphibious spell caster in his Spear Elf bunker who (including the ASF frog!) dash out 8 wounds.  5 attacks back against WS1, T1...dead mage.

The other cunning Skaven move I thought of would be to Wither the unit (I would have done that in my magic phase but Jonno had a lot of dispel dice and I didn't fancy Cascading when the frog was due a skewering anyway) as if a model's Toughness is reduced to 0 it dies.  No Look Out Sir.  No ward.  No armour.  Theoretically a really mean way of taking out a powerful spell caster (although if they're a lvl 4, of course, it's only a 1 in 3 chance they go Ribbit in the first place).

Anyways, I think it's a neat tactic (and seemingly under used, I guess because of the price tag of the scroll, double that of a dispel one) and will now use it in every game I play, despite it never working again (see my obsession with Jezzails, Night Runners, Warp Grinders, the Catapult and basically everything else sub optimal in the Skaven book with which I once rolled really, really above average!)

Good news Tom. My warriors won't be taking as many spell casters as the Empire (probably a lv 4 of Tz and a lv 2 of shadow or death rather than a lv4, lv 2 and ac ouple of priests/lectors).

I'll be bringing the pain in a more traditional halberd to the head type manner - just ask King Richard III

Ahh another convert to the dark arts of sub optimal units! Welcome! My current sub optimal flavour of the month is running 2 giants in my Orc and Goblin list. In my last game they spent 5 rounds of combat largely shouting at 10 high elf archers, who kept passing their stedfast ld test!

I love the hex scroll idea and I'm seriously tempted to try it out.

Tom Hale

hex scroll is horrible against bretts: she doesn't get LOS anymore as is infantry in cav and massively limits their movement

My Beastmen Giant spent 8 consecutive rounds of combat Yell and Balling at a Hellcannon (which never got to fight back due to it's lower Initiative), until I finally thumped it with a club 5 turns later smashing it to pieces. Got to love a Giant!

Excellent work! I'm playing a game against dwarves tonight so hopefully yell and bawl may actually be kind of useful. As all I seem to have played against is people with equal or higher initiative!
