Imperial Guard comp

So it seems there's a lot of guard hating going on.

I don't know what happened at OGIV but I haven't seen a cheesy guard list at OG* and the calls to BAN THIS SICK FILTH seem a little over the top to me.

So as someone whose played with guard a lot over the last year. And who also hates cheesy, leaf-blowing, spam, psyker battle squad lists more than any of you. I thought I'd offer my thoughts on a more detailed, involved comp for guard. It's only gonna be my two pence worth but see what you think. I will offer some explanation for my choices in some cases. Also note this is an OG COMP, it is designed to be harsh but FUN.

Maybe this might encourage other experienced generals using other armies to offer their opinions on comping their own armies...

IMPERIAL GUARD COMP

General Restrictions
For every unit with a dedicated transport you must take one without. Independent characters do not count for this purpose. An infantry platoon counts as ONE unit for this purpose, regardless of its comprising elements.

You must take one choice in each of Elites, Fast attack and Heavy Support before you can take a second in any other. You must take a second in each before a third in the same manner.

You must take at least as many Troops choices as you take in any of Elites, fast attack and heavy support. IE, you must take a third Troops choice before you take a third heavy support etc


Restrictions on unit choices
Company Command Squad becomes a 1+ choice. (I think this should be the case in many armies. Ie. if a Grey Knights army is to include any Grey Knights, it should feature a Grey Knights HQ choice)

The following become 0-1 choices and may not be taken as squadrons:
Vendetta Gunship+Valkyrie Assault Carrier (one maximum, either a Valk or Vendetta, not both)
Hydra Flak Tank

The following become 0-1 choices but MAY be taken as squadrons:
Ordnance Battery
Deathstrike Missile (obviously not as a squadron)

The following are banned:
Manticore Rocket Launcher
Psyker Battle Squad

You may take a total of three Leman Russes in any combination.

Restrictions on Troops choices

You must take at least two different Troops choices. ie One platoon + one penal legion.

Infantry Platoons are limited to 4 squads maximum

Infantry Platoons must include 1+ support squads (ie heavy weapons squad, special weapons squad, conscripts)

Restrictions on other units

Ratling squads and Rough riders can only be taken at full strength

That's it I think.

Though I have written this quite quickly. So may have missed something.

I like the sound of it, and I think we should try this out for the next Planet OG, anyone else got any other thoughts?

I still see the commissar blob being a problem. 2-3 40 man stubborn Ld10 blobs with orders is not pleasant and doable under that comp, otherwise good job!

I'd suggest either 0-1 on commissars or remove the execute rule so their just stubborn on a 10 (still not the nicest) but not quite as broke.

Also maybe having one of each of a valk and vendetta isn't all bad, I'd say 0-1 but not mutually exclude...

Dude 40 men (MEN yes, they euck arse) is easy to handle really with any decent assault troops (orks, BA etc etc) or just a few flamers. And it's leadership 9. There are many comparably stubborn things in other lists that are tougher.

The point about needing the support squads is that by taking the blobs you're forced to take more vunerable squads, meaning your lists becomes more balanced and you suffer in KP games.

It should be a problem! Because its a war game?

I say lets try it at the next single player Planet OG, i think for the doubles we keep it simple, depending on what points level we use

Hi all,

Some good stuff there Toby. Maybe a little far on the comping of platoons? The compulsory purchase of special/heavy/conscripts is probably the one I'd not go as far as. And maybe the 1+ on the CCS. I think being able to take a Lord Commisar or Primaris Psyker would be fine - as to be honest they're not that great choices anyway. Even the Commisar with the stealth blanket is still not that powerful.

Guard builds I thought/see are generally around multiple hydra/PBS/Vendetta/vets in chimeras/Manticore approach.

I think there probably still needs to be a bit more flexibility built in than your initial proposition.
