Ok, so following some discussion with mates back home, who all know their stuff, apparently I've gotten the highlighting/shading on the blade backwards.

I've basically just done standard highlighting which, while it looks good, isn't proper NMM. The colour theory of metals is pretty intense, and completely counter-intuitive to regular highlighting. So back to the reading and I shall see what happens on the other half of this girl's Chain Weapon.

Try, try, try again as they say...
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

best thing possible, get a picture of a cylinder of metal with the light hitting it from the same angle.

Just read a great article where you simply take a photo of the model before you basecoat it with a representative light source and it shows the true reflections of the metal as you need to paint it.

Its kinda brilliant in its simplicity.

Linky by any chance?

Wanting to have a stab at NMM before the year is out. The Sanguinor is looking at me wondering why he hasn't been done yet ;)
"Sanguinius. It should have been him. He has the vision and strength to take us to victory, and wisdom to rule once victory is won. For all his aloof coolness, he alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood. Each of us carries part of our father - Sanguinius holds it all." Horus

Heres a few I was pointed to:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1054-my-thoughts-on-nmm-updated

Most of its more the theory, rather than specific guides of painting models, since its pretty difficult to do a catch all for every type/shape/light angle of metallic reflections. I'm getting the feeling its alot of practice makes perfect

I agree that it generally looks good, I think it looks even better when you take the technique and use metallic paints!

Thank you Matt, I was feeling really stupid at not knowing what NMM meant and didn't want to ask anyone.

Phew! Glad I wasn't the only one!

Matt, the NMM and the flesh aren't using blue, mainly because I want to get the basics of NMM down before trying to branch out. Blue flesh I could have tried but its tricky to do without getting some Zombie looking model and I figured the rest would make up for it.

Shows you what I know!

For a painting project that apparently went wrong, it looks amazing! Don't beat yourself up too much.

Well after some reading and looking at what others have done, I practiced on my Souless' sword. I'm actually really enjoying this learning process, its really revived my love of painting which had drifted away somewhat lately. Expanding my horizons and whatnot. I seriously encourage you all to try something new painting-wise, it's so much fun. Anyway the result:

Photo lighting was bad so it looks darker than it is, but still too dark to be realistic, but the highlights are correct.

So I went back to the Assassin and did the rest of the chain blade:

I'm pretty damn happy with the blade on the right, you can see the difference between wrong nmm and right nmm. Needs a bit more white to make it really pop but good enough for now. Practice makes perfect  :1st:

Was just pointed to the single greatest tutorial known to man:

The model in question won a Golden Daemon, and he's explained how he painted every detail on the model very clearly. Its just beautiful...
