Having decided I wanted a small competitive 1K 40K army, I read the Grey Knight and BA codexs this wknd whilst doing a very boring trade show..

I love the fact BA can take bikes but in the end the fluff behind the Knights won through, plus the fact I have a few boxes GW gave me for free..

So with out going ultra cheese, any tips on what I should take?

I am going to have one of each of the troop choices and I am going to have a StormRaven, cant decide on my HQ though or the elites..

I have a much better understanding of 40K now having read a lot in the last 2 weeks but as much input as poss would be great...

Grey Knights in 1k is gonna be tough. Very expensive and easy to get a bit carried away with the options...

One thing to note, which I know many people lose track of is: Grey Knights are shooting first combat last, if you must. People get lost in the shiney power weapons on every model, but they are still just Space marines and only 1A each. Their true strength is S5 Stormbolters on every model, move and shoot, move and shoot.

I don't really know enough about individually what works and what doesn't but my thoughts:

The HQ is up to you and depends what you want him to do... Libbie or the cheaper lord would be my choice, but go really easy on the options. You can happily spend 200+ pts on him, and suddenly have no pts for other stuff

Purifiers are really good and pretty damn cheap, Halberds I think are generally considered the best option for them. You can choose Special weapons depending on what you want them to do.

Inquisitors give you some fun stuff, modelling and options-wise and allows for a bit more character to the list, for relatively cheap. This would be my choice at low points, you can either go mad combat, with Crusaders and Deathcult or heavy shooting with Jokaero, and Servitors, your choice really.

Paladins are just way to expensive.

I think a Stormraven is alot of points and will severely hinder you taking much stuff, but if its the model you want, then go for gold. Use it as a carrier for either some counter attacking assault based stuff (Purifiers with Incinerators, or an inq combat unit), and make everything else shooting.

I'd skip on Heavies with all the other stuff going on.

My thoughts for a list would be along the line of:

HQ to taste (personally I'd take a cheap Libby)
Purifiers, with Incinerators (this could easily be a Inq unit or whatever)
Termie squad, with Psycannons,
Big PAGK squad with Psycannons
Stormraven

S5 on everything

I don't think you'd fit much else in TBH.
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

Yep, what James said sums up my thoughts... At 1k, with the stormraven, you need to have a dead cheap HQ or you wont get enough bodies in the list...

Oh, and I have a box of unbuilt Gk's I can trade with you for something buddy...
In the style of Tom Hale... F*ck Ushabti!!!

Yes please sir...

I liked the looked of the Purifiers, despite the crap psychic power, and think for the HQ that the cheapest HQ choice, the Brotherhood champion is pretty nails for 100pts...

Should I go with StormRaven or LandRaider?

That power is awesome! Basically means you wipe the floor with any Fearless unit. and knocking any models off a unit attacking you is always a good thing.

Personally I wouldn't go with either, but if you must, a Stormraven looks alot more fun.

It wounds each model on a 4+ with all saves allowed, it's okay....but awesome?
Dont understand why unless its against unarmoured stuff, but why fearless units, are they usually unarmoured?

I know it's not sensible at that points level, but I just like the model after having seen Juliens that he sold to Seb for a tenner.... :))

The key thing is it goes before all attacks, hence anything that dies doesn't get to attack, and since you essentially just have really bloody expensive Marines, any reduction in attacks back is a massive bonus. Okay you aren't killing many Termies with it, but there is a chance (and against Termies you have a whole bunch of I6 (with halberds) Power Weapon attacks so... meh? :wink;m::)   At worst its a small benefit, at best its a game winner, if they fail a whole bunch of saves.

As for fearless, all wounds caused count for combat res, and most horde units are fearless, and usually have very little save. Take Orcs for example, if you pass one leadership test, you kill more than 40% of any unit. 40 bloody percent!!! Those dead models are then not attacking you, meaning you lose less models, and finally, those wounds are then doubled by No Retreat saves for being fearless when you inevitably win the combat....

First question, I'm using a Razorback instead of a Rhino, is it best to keep it cheap and cheerful or spend the points on lascannons etc..?

Of the standard upgrades (dozerblade ect), what do people normally take?

Tom Hale

Most people either take las/ plas combo or twin las for tank busting.

Also re cheap HQ what about an inquisitor with forceweapon, hammer hand, rad and phycojoke grenades? About 100pts, buffs the hell out of hammer unit and not useless himself

I vote storm raven: get where your going. Also 4+ turbo save beats av14 (which is melta bait)
