3) Win at least two tournament games (preferably in the same tournament but lets not push it)

Well, that's one down already in my first tournament of the year (Bad Dice Masters Open event).

2 wins first two games of day two - much needed as I was just about on the verge of a rage quit this morning (not helped by getting naff all sleep thanks to trying to sort out misbehaving laptop last night plus waking up about 04:00 this morning and the noise of the baby sucking her thumb keeping me awake).

2nd win was doubly sweet since it was against my friend Andy who I've not beaten since our first game of 8th edition (and if you want to count games where we were playing all the rules just about properly, not since our last game of 7th edition).

So, thought I'd do a quick update on my progress on this year's resolutions

Quote
1) Attend at least 4 WFB singles tournaments this year (wife and child permitting, which may mean it ends up being 4 total)

Well I'm on target to make the four in total this year as I've already clocked up three (although one was a doubles) and will be going to number four at the end of the month.

Quote
2) Achieve mid-table mediocrity in at least one tournament (by which I mean finish in the middle third of the competitors)

This one's looking rather ambitious unless I can find a tournament where the top 300 or so in the rankings aren't attending.

Quote
3) Win at least two tournament games (preferably in the same tournament but lets not push it)

Actually got this one already.  Won two at the Bad Dice Open in January and another two at the Summer Incursion last weekend (although one of them was literally down to a couple of really bad dice rolls on my opponent's behalf)

Quote
4) Get at least 2000 points of my High Elf army "finished" (final washes & highlights, varnish and static grass) - not sure if this is being too ambitious or not enough. I've got over 3000 points worth to tournament+ standard (i.e. 3 colours plus some shades and highlights) but on the other hand I've decided to paint the armour slightly differently on the later stuff and so need to go back and bring the older stuff into line, which means I've got about 2500 points worth to bring up to the same standard.

This one is going to be a fail.  I struggled to get some new models up to standard for the Summer Incursion and I doubt I'm going to have time to finish anything by Christmas.

Quote5) Build and paint the scenery the wife bought me for my birthday and Christmas

Also looking like being a fail.  I had to abandon work on the buildings to do my stuff for the Incursion.  I was trying to fill in some of the horrendous number of gaps in the brickwork of the Watchtower before I undercoat it but still have a way to go.

Quote6) Finalise my plans for the joint Skaven army I'm doing with the wife and get round to clipping out and building the Skaven models I've already bought.

Also going to be a fail as I've not had a chance to sit down and doing a proper plan (so far it's all in my head) and needless to say, with not having time to finish the High Elves or buildings, there's been no work on the Skaven models

Quote7) Try and play at least 2 games a month once the wife is back at work.

Have just about managed that at the moment but my work moves office soon so I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get down to the club the two nights a month the missus isn't working that night,

Mid year update on gaming ambitions:

1) Attempt to keep hold of my Wood Elf Best General icon for the year (get it back Monday) Yes, currently world No1
2) Assemble & paint my Beastman army (purchasded from OG) by Mansfield Maul, had stopped, but after developing a basing technique I like, back on track.
3) Get a podium finish of some kind, 2nd at masters Open & 3rd @ Impfest IV
4) Get a top 20 finish in a major two day event (70+ players) 7th @ SCGT, 20th at Sheffield & 14th @ Summer Incursion
5) Add to current armies only & dont start any new ones, A bit of a cheat this as the only armies I dont have are, DE, DOC, Bretts, Empire & Ogres, the Ogre book is gonna be tempting, but hopeflly I can hold of til next year.
6) Play at least two games of WAB, Fail, played one game of Clash of Empires, which I think is better, so will probably drop WAB.
7) Play at least one game of "Secrets of the 3rd Reich" Failed, but still hope as there is one player down the club.
8) Run three tournaments, run one, with two others booked so on target.
9) Attempt to run the largest single day warhammer tourney in the UK (circa 70 players) Failed, could not find suitable venue, have upped to 48 though.
10) Take my Orcs to at least one event, Update, ended up as a stand in player at a small 16 player event on Sunday & took an all Orc army, with Wyvern, Trolls & Giant (got three bloody draws).

4. Success on the TK, though fail in that I bought a skaven army instead!
Might have spoken too soon, at the 6 nations this weekend the dwarfs really showed some weaknesses against some build I thought they'd do ok against.  I'm really tempted to try TK because their ability to deal with chaff and use the sphinxes to hold stuff up.

Complete and have fully painted the skaven army
Get into top 50 whfb rankings
Play agots the board game
Paint my dark elf bloodbowl team
Paint and play with my shroud mages for uncharted seas
Play at least 10 different games/ systems
Get up to date reading a song of ice and fire
Try for best sports in every event I go to
got all the skaven i want, got just 5 gutter runners to go and then all the good and medicore units are done (couple of characters need touching up and i've got the rat ogres and weapons teams but they don't count)
i got into the top 50 earlier on this year but dropped since. hopefully jump back up with a good finish at cardiff (unlikely due to painting) or another two dayer by the end of the year
played 6 games of AGOT already and loving it: always up to play more. only fraction not played is greyjoy
cr*p fogot about those *sighs as team goes from cupboard to painting table*
changed fleet to dragonlords, need to pick up the rulebook, some destoyers and a dragon and get the lot painted
not doing so badly on the games/ gaming systems. got whfb, 40k, mordheim, bloodbowl, AGOT the board game, uncharted seas, castle ravenloft and the card game Cruntch!, so 2 more games by the end of the year is doable. might push for a few more boardgame nights at the club (id love to try Chaos in the old world at somepoint) and a game of spacehulk or horus heresy with my brother and i'm done
read all of A song of Ice and Fire, read a load of the stuff online, downloaded the podcast and listen to that too. looking forward so much to Dancing with Dragons  :))
tried for best sports, ocassionally get a vote or two, but seams rather incompatable with top 50 aim with skaven and dark elves
all in all going well, espeically if i keep this painting kick going

The Trampoline

Well almost six months on and how am I getting on.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
1) Not to buy any more miniatures (except for the abomination for my IOB Skaven) and a couple more steel Legion - so no more after these :wink;m::)

Well this was never going to happen, no true war-gamer can go cold turkey and stop buying. I have probably bought less than I have the last few years, only a warsphinx, some oop empire metal handgunners and swordsmen, some reaper and dark sword miniature, 15 or so bestigor and a beastlord, some empire state troops, whoops! Hopefully not going to buy much more the rest of the year, the new necromancer aside,  :wink;m::

2) Finish my Altdorf army.

Done a lot on this, red spray paint helps, much more battle ready state but still a lot to be done, won't see this project finished for a while as it will be a large army (over 3K points)

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
3) Finish my blue Dark Elf Army

Working on it, probably won't ever be finished as might add to it with a dragon and manticore (don't worry these are models I already own and need touching up) at some point but not this year. However, it is in a much more battle ready state than it was last year, SCGT really got me working on it, likewise with Cardiff, hopefully have proper skirmish trays ready and maybe even finish my bolt throwers (yes I said bolt throwers.)

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
4) Run and write up a High Elf vs. Dark Elf campaign.

Started, but no time to really do it with tournie and Tides practise, plus not wanting to play with my Dark Elves so much anymore. This one is dead I'm afraid.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
5) Finish my Steel Legion Guard army

Nothign has happened so far so this one is dead, will revisit next year maybe.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
6) Reduce my mini collection

This one I've worked on quite a lot this year due to cash shortage, got rid of my warriors, lot of dwarf stuff, lots of random bits and pieces, and odd miniatures, old guard heavy weapons teams and an entire cadian army (sold to my mate for enough for a new bicycle.  All of it I had no interest in painting, just bought because the price was right at the time. With existing pledges and a new oe to build and paint a Tomb king army no time for a lot of models, nor storage space so got rid of a lot that ultimately wasn't ever going to use.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
7) Start and Finish my red Dark Elf Army

Not going to happen, the blue on is taking long enough, also not sure about the red scheme now.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
8) Start and Finish my IOB and Abomb Skaven.

Still doable as its not a huge amount of models and I have a brown spray. Would be something different to paint as well.

Quote from: The Trampoline on January 05, 2011, 01:54:50 pm
Not so bothered about tournaments at the moment, I'll stick to local ones and place where I place. I've already been in the top 50 for the rankings so slipping further down doesn't bother me.

Only been to two rankings tournaments so far this year, Winter War and SCGT, and Cardiff soon, had fun there, but lack of cash and cant be bothered attitude has put me of going to tournaments, except for OG ones, and doubles with Ed (they're huge fun!)

The Trampoline

An updated set of resolutions.

1) No friviolous buying, only things to add to the following projects if needed (except for the new necromancer, he's ace.)

2) Complete 2999points of my Altdorf army for Tides, then another 2K of points so I can play a huge battle with it at somepoint.

3) Finish my blue Dark Elves, this will be a concerted effect to paint all the dark elf models I have that will go into this army.

4) Paint a 1000points of Brets for a doubles competition.

5) Paint a 2400 Tomb king army, 12 skeleton achers started, a whole shedload left to do.

6) Paint my Island of Blood Skaven and Abomination.

7) Contiune to reduce my mini collection - anyone fancy buying a painted high elf army?
