Yep had a good time, but Empire (and possibly 8th Ed) are not for me, will try something different for Warrington..

The Trampoline

I had a good time in the end but I was a bit disapointed in my finish. Despite 3 big wins, and 2 big losses I was 35th when I thought I would finsih top 20. Ends up I didn't get much for painting which really propelled you up, which really annoyed me. I thoguht Iw as goign to a gaming competition not a painting competition, I don't think I'll bother next year unless they really improve on the whole thing.

Tell me about it dude! I think we worked out that I would have been about 8th if i'd had a crap bit of fluff and the two incredibly picky judges had liked my army! I know there need to be soft scores but they were far too important in this in my opinion.

Think i'll still go next year though!
In the style of Tom Hale... F*ck Ushabti!!!

The Trampoline

Why do there need to be soft scores, shouldn't a tournement be about how good a player you are, not that you're got a very good looking army and written a back story for it. If you bring an unpainted army when you've been told it needs to be painted then you should have your points deducted or figures taken off the table, but why should I be penalised because I'm not a very good painter and can't shade and highlight. If I perform well on the gaming table I should finish well, not drop down because my painting sucks.

Anyway the Carnage will never change, I'm not going to bother wasting a lot of money to place badly despite winning games.

Its the old Game vs Hobby debate.

A tournament is testing your ability to play the Game.

A painting contest is testing your ability to paint.

so.

If they're going to use both should it not technically be a Hobby tournament?

I agree as its so subjective as well.  If a judge doesnt like your painting style... you're screwed.

In the summer of 2011 he moved North... spreading the word of House OG.

I am Mike of House OG.  Ogger in the North.  And Ginger is coming.

I am 100% behind seperate scoring unless the event is classified as a hobby event, but if this was the case then all scores should have equal value.

I think it would be good to track on the rankings seperately painting scores & sportsmanship.

At AGOM there where no soft scores had there been I would probably have placed much higher as I got 2nd best army, but I would much rather have the two seperate.

It was funny to see both Ian (3rd) and Ben J (1st) not actually believe they had placed, asking the judges 'are you sure?'

Nick (2nd) got there because of a hungover verbal fluff, worth 5 VP's

Saying all that , it was all in the rulespack so should not have come as a suprise to anyone...

Mike

I see Andy from GW used Cardiff as an excuse not to paint!

Anyone get a look at the stuff he had painted?

Quoteand I came 10th out of 64 players; not too bad considering it was my first try with the army!

Quote from Adam........First try my ****  :wink;m::

Andy, do you actually care that much where you place?

Sure it's good to do well but unless I think I stand a chance of winning an event I have virtually no interest in my overall placing as long as I have fun games and challenge myself against my opponets.

I like soft scores I think it encourages people to improve their armies and to widen their approach to the hobby.  Splitting them off completely drops the game into who's better at working the mechanics to their advantage and who's got the best list.  Guess it wouldn't bother me too much though.  There are only 2 awards that really interest me:
1. Best in race
2. Best painted/army

Best overall is now a bit more meaningful than under 7th where because of the books it was pretty clearly going to be one of 4-5 races that would win overall and if you didn't have them you were unlikely to have a chance.
