Title: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: TkaiC on January 04, 2014, 03:46:22 pm
Haven't seen Tom in a while...

Ok, my lack of love for Warhammer is currently being caused solely by my job which, whilst highly enjoyable, keeps sending me outside the M25 on Mondays and Thursdays.  However, I've been getting some of my painting done and figured rather than have army specific threads, I'll do one for all my projects this year.

My 2014 projects are Dreadball teams (I have 4 after OG's sale last year), small(ish) Imperial Guard and Blood Angels armies, finishing my Skaven and Chaos Marines and then with two (yes, I've already added to my resolutions lists) further ideas - a Mousillon Bretts list (so mutants, undead *and* knights) and a small Fallen Angels contingent led by Cypher as I have the model and he's got new rules.  No purchases anticipated, I'll use the Dark Vengeance Dark Angels and my CSM spares (I need to learn to sculpt robes, then it's all good!).

Now, I had a week off for Christmas and got some painting done, plus I spent this morning doing some more and so, on with the pics!

DREADBALL:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04145952_zps92c282fc.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04145952_zps92c282fc.jpg.html)
My Orx team, they have Orx Guards and Goblins Jacks - so basically a roster of Vinny Jones and some little guys who actually get the ball.  The playing style seems to be hitting the other team off the ball. They've been base coated, washed with Devlan Mud and then a simple highlight added so are "table ready" rather than finished.  I'll be aiming to add weathering/play damage to all the models in due course.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150118_zps0c2fa758.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150118_zps0c2fa758.jpg.html)
A close up on one of the Orx Guards, I love this model but it just shows how much tidying up I have to do!

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150025_zpsf0f6d957.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150025_zpsf0f6d957.jpg.html)
Their adversaries, the Trontek 29ers.  A human team, they've got Guards, Jacks and Strikers and play a more running/passing game.  The colour scheme is taken from artwork in the rule book rather than the painted models on the Mantic site, which are metal bodied with blue/white helmets.  I like green.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150059_zps4deb472d.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150059_zps4deb472d.jpg.html)
I know, I know, *amazing* freehand work.  Stop, you're too kind.  And there's too much flash on these models for me to get it all off, seriously, painful to clean.

IMPERIAL GUARD

So, my thinking is I'd like a force that can ally with my Marines of all shades (Loyal and Traitor), so the Guard are a good idea.  To keep with my Iron Warriors the first guy I've painted up is a Techpriest Enginseer, he's either the twisted acolyte of a Warpsmith when they're Traitor Guard or the Nick Knowles of 40K, desperately undoing the evil of the Cowboy Builders in Space  for the glory of the Emperor.  Well, it makes sense in my head.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150242_zps19af1d96.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150242_zps19af1d96.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150305_zps76484f2b.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150305_zps76484f2b.jpg.html)

He needs some troops to lead and I have a soft spot for the old metal Catachans.  Ebay implies no one else does so these were a bargain!  I can see why no one likes the plastic ones though, but again Ebay provided a large box for cheap.  Once I can bring myself to paint them my infantry numbers will be complete.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150455_zpsda811026.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150455_zpsda811026.jpg.html)

I haven't painted the mortar yet so this guy looks particularly stupid, strolling around battlefields with his lucky shell.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150517_zpse874d29d.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150517_zpse874d29d.jpg.html)

And it wouldn't be Guard without tanks, so here are two I've started.  Little does the brave Tank Commander realise the beast is actually behind him!

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-01-04150732_zps926af2db.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-01-04150732_zps926af2db.jpg.html)
Bloody Outflanking units!

Wooo hooo! It's back for 2014!

Glad to see your ramblings will continue. The Dreadball stuff looks really good, how are you going to base them? Football style pitch? Have to drag my ass down the club and give you a game.

Plus liking the start on the Imperial Guard - tanks are fun! I promise I will paint more Ultramarines and actually give you a proper game!!

Keep up the good work!

The Dreadball pitch (board) I have is futuristic so I think a black base, with some sponge painted white blue will look space-like, maybe.  I need to get some hex bases for them though as annoyingly the boxed game didn't include them, bah!

There's nice technique for painting individual stars with a bit of twinkle on that I've done for my Teclis's cloak amongst other High Elf things, which I can dig out if any good?

My continued absence from the club *will* abate this week, honest, probably, almost definitely.  In the mean time, I've picked up some Empire bits which means my original Pi-Rats idea is back on...here's a work in progress of a Warlord type chap. Body/head/sword arm are from the Stormvermin sprue, cloak from a Nightrunner, "parrot" taken from (I think) a Brettonian knight's arm whilst the pistol is from that Empire bits lot I mentioned earlier.

Fair bit still to do on him paint wise but as a test kitbash I'm pretty happy with him.  Now...about those unit fillers...

That was the month that was...

Despite the minor distractions of New Year, way too much work and organising most of my wedding plans, January actually saw me play a game of 40K, hooray, with my new Khorne themed Chaos Marines.  Whilst there I discussed with Mr Cunningham how I wanted to paint my juggernaut in a "magma" theme.  He dug out a painting guide and here're the results:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09203443_zpsa73a36f2.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09203443_zpsa73a36f2.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09203419_zpsbdced245.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09203419_zpsbdced245.jpg.html)

I'm not that pleased with it, I think I've been a bit heavy handed, thinner lines would've worked better, as would less magma over all.  It'll do for now but will be re-painted at some point when I'm feeling braver!

Also in the world of 40k, my Guard have a theme, hooray!  It's Adeptus Mechanicus...er...what?  Yeah, the technowierdos of Mars have a new recruit.  This means I need to repaint my tanks...boo.  And my guardsmen are...wrong.  My painted Catachans will remain as they are, and be used as Sgt Harker's Veterans when deployed, because that's an awesome unit for infiltrating stealth/camo-cloak sniper filth whilst the rubbish plastic guys in the strip-bath (not as rude as it sounds) will get bionic'd up to be Adeptus/Borg types.

I'd already painted a Techpriest Enginseer, he's now got some friends:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09202843_zps413118bb.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09202843_zps413118bb.jpg.html)

By which I mean mindless walking tools.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09202733_zpsc0ddab60.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09202733_zpsc0ddab60.jpg.html)

One of whom has the most important job of all, this guy:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09202759_zps5d8c54b8.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09202759_zps5d8c54b8.jpg.html)

What does he do?  Tighten up Leman Russ barrels by himself?  Open really big jars? No, he goes around giving everyone bunny ears for photos.  Because in the grimdark future, someone has to go and make it that bit more irritating.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-02-09202916_zps06b21c2d.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-02-09202916_zps06b21c2d.jpg.html)

Seriously though, I think the 5 Servitors and Priest make a decent unit.  I've given them heavy bolters without really thinking of it but for games I reckon the plasma cannons are a bargain, plus the servo arms provide AP1 combat punch.  A Chimera donated from one of the infantry platoons will make them shooty and mobile, restoring hull points on a 2+ and all for 235pts.

I painted the flesh Ceramite White, then a wash of 2:1:2 Drakenhof Blue/Reikland Flesh-shade/Water.  It was meant to look like frozen flesh, not sure if it's worked perfectly, may come back to it.

February will hopefully see me convert up my first unit of Martian infantry and make a start on my Warriors of Chaos...and maybe get some games in :-)

I like the Juggernaut, think it looks good. Maybe make the lines a bit more angular like lightning bolts if you are going to change, but don't think you need to.

Mars theme sounds interesting (though making me feel hungry for nougat filled chocolate), the Servitors look cool. Looking forward to seeing more!

Love the photo-bombinjg there.

On a side note, did you get my PM? If so, if you drop me the details of the skaven stuff I'll start sorting something so we can give Hail Ceaser a shot.

Of Rats and Men...

So, a month and a bit since my last update and what's been happening?  Well I've decided that my Blood Angels will be joined by some Space Wolves and that I'll be painting up some Emperor's Children to join my Iron Warriors to cover all flavours of marine.  I've assembled most of my new Warriors of Chaos Army but my painting?  Well, it's stalled a bit.  I've been getting stuck around the base painting stage of each model I try, with one exception.  My almost entirely neglected Skaven have got a whole 500pts worth of reinforcements!

So...what does 500pts of Skaven look like? Either a sea of rats or...

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-03-29102714_zps68012957.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-03-29102714_zps68012957.jpg.html)

This guy!

I'm pretty happy with how's he turned out, particularly after I found that using Bleached Bone for highlights on green works really well, or even if you use it for lightning as I have here.  Unfortunately, the eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed one of my cats somewhere in the background of the photo.  Yeah.  Cats v Rats.  He decided to knock it off the mantelpiece almost immediately after that photo was taken and so...

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-03-29102750_zpscafe87c3.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-03-29102750_zpscafe87c3.jpg.html)

I have some gluing to do again!  The other side of the halberd shows that my lightning looks less good here, basically my usual problem of a few too many lines - must learn that less is more!

Mars Attacks!

So, often I have an idea and then, er, never get round to it.  This time, dear reader, is not one of those times.

I said my new Imperial Guard were going to be Adeptus Mechanicus themed and, in the light of alleged point reduction for Stormtroopers, it seems a good time to get some painted up...particularly as there's a certain Kill Team campaign in the offing...set on a Forge World where <<REMOVED BY ORDER OF THE INQUISITION>>

Ahem, anyway, the AM as I'll snappily rename them, are the wierdy geeks of the 40K world who are actually not very good at technology after all.  All the really good stuff was invented ages ago (like Centurions, who've *always* been around) and the new products of the forgeworlds are just inferior copies. And titans.

I'm not building a titan.

Instead, I decided to paint a Kasrkin red and grey and see how it turned out.  It looks like this:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-06220429_zpsddf03835.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-06220429_zpsddf03835.jpg.html)

I'm quite happy with the result.  Halfords Red primer  for the red, highlighted with Mephiston Red, the grey is in fact Mid Blue from Tamaya colour.  Black is, er, undercoat black and the metal is, er, boltgun metal (wow, intricate painting here).  Then the visor is catachan green highlighted with scorpion before a hefty dab of bleached bone that the flash has *really* picked out here. It's not that bad on the model, probably.  Also, I picked out the trim of his boots in bright red, because these guys get the best gear - Louboutins included.

The numerals on the shouder pad facing the camera are transfers whilst the other shoulder pad has a magma pattern (as per the juggernaut a few posts back).  They have hot shot lasguns you see.  Hot.  Like magma.  And Mars is, well, an arid dust bowl without volcanoes so we'll just stick with the hot shots bit.

The base will be light grey and trimmed with brown (as per the techpriest/servitors from before) as I think this offsets the red nicely.  All in all I should have two squads painted by the end of next weekend, just in time for the new book and the sad, sad news that I actually do need a couple of those ugly Taurox Primes.

All change, all change...

Right, having got the new Astra Militarum book, I'm not exactly chuffed to pieces with it.  Some decent changes but they've nerfed my favourite character (Sgt Harker) and got rid of Sly Marbo entirely.  Well, until they release a cash in Dataslate, obviously.

That moaning aside, the lists I'm drawing up have only a few Stormtroopers in them, also, the price for the Kasrkin has got a bit silly on Ebay.  Long story short, I have no Kasrkin anymore, so the previous update is entirely irrelevant.

I've been painting some Death Company...starting with:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19172943_zpsa4dacac6.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19172943_zpsa4dacac6.jpg.html)

Death Company Tycho.  Now, he should be awesome - special ammunition, ignores armour in assault, all the usual Death Company frills of Fleet, Feel No Pain and Rage but...and it's a big but*...he can't join units.  So it's just one very angry man running across the battlefield, shouting incoherently.

Wait, that is awesome.  So, basically I'm going to have a Land Raider Redeemer with one really angry marine inside, all for the bargain price of, er, almost 500pts.

So, more sensibly, I've also started painting some other DC.  The aim is to have 8 painted to be deployed with Corbulo and a Chaplain either from a Drop Pod if I magically find one super cheap somewhere or, more likely, in the afore mentioned Redeemer.

I've also been going through some of the things I've bought purely as a painting project and found Mouslings.  These are Reaper Miniatures oh so twee take on standard Fantasy tropes and, well, I love them.  I've painted the Mouseketeer first:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19171843_zps22335859.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19171843_zps22335859.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19172050_zps91f65fba.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19172050_zps91f65fba.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19172104_zps9d1a0ca7.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19172104_zps9d1a0ca7.jpg.html)

Who is perhaps not as angry as Tycho, except that he is furious.  Bh dhm tsh!  Fur-ious. Furry.  He's a mouse.  Ah shut up.

Anyway, he's only little:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19172036_zpscebee89d.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19172036_zpscebee89d.jpg.html)

But has plenty of friends who I'll be painting this week as I'm actually off work for a change, fabulous!

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-19172231_zps45ad9166.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-19172231_zps45ad9166.jpg.html)

*And I cannot lie.

Haha loving the Mouseketeers!! Look great. Shame about your favourite characters, but any fun opponent would let you take a character from an old book. Having played against Sly Marbo though, that won't be me!

Oh shh forum, yes I do want to reply.  Right, the ongoing nightmare that is wedding planning continues to ruin all of my plans as far as the hobby goes.  Luckily, the joyous date is just around the corner (a week tomorrow...erp!) and after that Mrs Tom is stuck with me and I can hobby as much as I darn well please.  Well, as much as work lets me.  And Mrs Tom.  Sigh, time for more unfulfilled promises...

Where we are

I finished the Mouslings!

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-04-21200810_zps6320d3bb.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-04-21200810_zps6320d3bb.jpg.html)

Where we're going...A TALE OF GAMERS

I love the Tale of Gamers challenge, because I actually did manage to keep a promise.  Once.  I made my CSM Iron Warriors with some actual conversions and stuff, which made me very happy.  A new one's been proposed and I'm going to try and enter 3 times by painting units for my Warriors of Chaos, Blood Angels and Bretonnian armies simultaneously.  Which means they'll all just be red probably.  I should also be doing Astra Militarum as well, there's a strong chance the BA may sit in storage til the new book comes along.

I have lists in mind for each, comments and criticism welcome.  They're not meant to be push overs but definitely on the fun side.  This week, I introduce my 2500pts northern barbarian horde...THE WARRIORS OF CHAOS!  The over riding theme of the army is speed.  The only infantry choice are Ambushers and everything else is pretty much a Turn 2 charge threat.

Lords

Galrauch
I started off loving this model, now I've actually got it, less impressed.  I should definitely have got a Black Dragon and converted an extra head but, it's still a dragon, and fluff wise he's immense

Heroes

Exalted BSB, Mark & Steed of Slaanesh, Flail
I like the hellstriders.  A lot.  And adding a killy champion to them is a good idea I think.  Plus it's one of the few ways of having a BSB who can keep up with Galrauch and reduce the risk of him biting his own head off
Wulfrik The Wanderer
Two reasons. Great model.  Great back story. Oh, and Seafang.  So three things

Lots of Core
24 Marauders, Flails, Full Command, Mark of Slaanesh Fearless S6 ambushers, done
3 Lots of 5 Dogs deployment drops/chaff
2 Unmarked Chariots zoom, zoom!
5 Marauder Horse w/flails zoom, zoom!
5 Marauder Horse w/spears and shield zoom, zoom!

Special
9 Hellstriders even more zoom, zoom!
Chimera zoom, zoom! With wings!

Waste of Rare points
Giant
Giant
2 big stompy guys, still fast, add some monster killing options as well as infantry eating shenanigans.  I have the old Marauder model for one and a plastic one for the other

Today I had to spend time arguing about kilt measurements.  Why.  Just...why?

Anyways, back with gaming, I should have said, this month is about clearing some of my 'other projects' and getting things ready to start in July.  Then my first month will probably be:

WoC - A chariot and the dogs (200pts)
b]BA - A Baal Predator (Don't have the book to hand but it's close to 200)
Bretts - Bit of a cheat, but 40 bowmen, some of whom I've already started but another unit including Bertrand the Brigand and pals as well (240pts +braziers)

Prior to getting stuck into ATOG, I really need to finish off some more CSM bits.  I have some lovely old metal berzerker models to paint and I should have some bikes done by tomorrow night too.

That was the Waagh That Was

Another Spoon joins the collection.  Had a mare of a day before getting to Wandsworth, fortunately Sam could step in to cover my first game.  Playing in accordance with the Tactica Clementicus he lost.  I continued this theme for the next two games.  In conclusion, my Skaven list...didn't work.  This was about 50% list writing (I stand by the Vermin Lord, but the Poison Wind Mortars were a complete waste of 200pts), 45% poor tactical decisions (getting my Plague Furnace flank charged in both games kinda indicates I do not know what I'm doing, forgetting a unit had Flame Cage cast on it and so massacring half my Warlord's unit for absolutely no tactical advantage confirms the hypothesis) and 5% bad dice (well, we always blame the dice).  Plus side, my two games against Giles (Undead) and Jonno (High Elves) were against very fun opponents so cheers guys!

I'm now going to be play testing a variety of armies for London Calling.  The main themes have to be:

1.  Lots of banners to ensure Fortitude.  But must be careful that these units don't get trampled and therefore give up extra VPs from losing said banners.

2.  Plenty of (fast moving) units as the tournament has a variety of missions that require you to have more units than your opponent in various places

The options:

Bretts - Fast moving, but without a lot of practice the long lances of knights may prove tricky for me to use effectively.  Also, new book coming out shortly (allegedly) so I'll just keep painting the models I like rather than draw up an actual army at the mo.

Skaven - Contenders.  Banners aplenty, plenty of rat darts/swarms to sneak around capturing table space (although durability will be an issue) and, of course, the Hell Pit Abomination is broken.  We know.

Warriors - Pricey to have many banners and probably lacking in the sheer number of units needed to capture table space, but balanced by serious durability and killyness.

Isn't this meant to be a PLOG?

Yes it is.  I have in fact painted some CSM bikes up, but the new Mrs Clements has selfishly taken the camera (aka her phone) to work with her, so I'll put up some photos another time.

Title: 3D6" From Rage Quit - Tale of Gamers Update
Post by: TkaiC on July 07, 2014, 05:41:32 pm
So we're in July.  To get the ball rolling, here are my WIP shots for my armies:

Bretts (c.50pts, WIP)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163438_zps6d59a0bf.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163438_zps6d59a0bf.jpg.html)

Not the greatest paint job, but the red/yellow gives a nice finish I think and I'm happy with the base.  My plan is to have 3 'types' of archer - these red/yellow guys.

These guys for Bertrand's Brigands

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163848_zps734ff42f.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163848_zps734ff42f.jpg.html)

The brazier unit filler will be for the third type, my Mousillon (evil...) section.  Initially these were going to be made from crypt ghouls but, well, they looked rubbish so I'm back to the drawing board on them.  Zombies probably.  Hopefully have all 3 archer units well underway before the month is out.

Blood Angels (265pts, WIP)

Ah, choosing wargear by asking someone who knows nothing about 40K "What shall I put on these?", cue Powerfist, Hand Flamer and Thunder Hammer adding a massive 65pts to this unit of Death Company!  Add 100pts of Chaplain and it's the month's input and a bit.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163637_zps282663fb.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163637_zps282663fb.jpg.html)

Bit of a cheat as I started these before I even got married, but still lots to do before they're finished.  Annoyingly I added too much blue to their highlights so they don't look black enough at the moment, hopefully brightening up their details and another Nuln Oil wash will rectify the situation

Warriors of Chaos - 18pts (WIP)

Here's the test model for my marauder horsemen - they're flail wielding Khorne worshippers, hence the red.  My first time trying snow bases using a sprinkling of bicarb onto pva, I think I may be doing it wrong as all the powdery bits fell off after it'd dried, leaving a more 'slush' look.  Boo. Another 4 of these, plus a champion and the unit's done.  Then I'm intending to do a chariot as well to get over the 200 mark.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163528_zps33aaf921.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163528_zps33aaf921.jpg.html)

AND THE REST

I've finished off a few more Chaos marines, plus the original 40k Man In Black, the Emperor's Champion:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07164021_zpsc0ecd544.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07164021_zpsc0ecd544.jpg.html)
Messy (World)eater, clearly.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163608_zps8e950654.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163608_zps8e950654.jpg.html)
I have no use for this guy, I just like the model.  Does anyone even play Black Templars anymore?

And, as I said before, I've half done my CSM bikes now:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-07163946_zpsd6c5b9b9.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-07163946_zpsd6c5b9b9.jpg.html)

All needing more work this month, but not a bad start!

Really like the dirty yellow and reds on the Bretonnian peasant - how did you base it?

Test Marauder also a favourite, liking the subtler use of red than the average Khorne army.

Good to see some Tale WIP stuff posted!

54 points in 11 days...

Ah cheap archers, the backbone of my proposed Brett army.  Annoyingly, this means that it'll take quite a few to fill up the 200pt monthly target for The Tale that's...apparently...running.

First unit of 10, with stakes:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-19114241_zps2a175f01.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-19114241_zps2a175f01.jpg.html)

I've now realised the point of a brazier is to fill the gap from a 4 man stake base and a 5 wide rank...will paint one up sharpish - that takes this unit to a whole 65 points!

Stupid, stupid Tom.

Now, the 10 above are all lined up quite neatly.  Foolishly, with the next unit, which will be 20 strong with full command, I used the slot bases where the gap is on the horizontal, rather than diagonal of the base and so the unit doesn't rank up.  Grr.

Especially as this didn't use to be a problem for Bretts:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-19114431_zps712553a1.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-19114431_zps712553a1.jpg.html)

(NB, Bertrand and his pals are currently being stripped of the paint job I've inherited here via Ebay!  As you can probably see, the archers are awaiting highlights, eyes (I HATE PAINTING EYES) and basing)

Now this leaves me with a few possible solutions:

1) Leave a little gap.
2) Create some sort of unit fillers for the front rank
3) Re Base

3 is admitting defeat and so not an option.  I'm intending to go for 2, but reserve the right to be grumpy when it didn't work and claim 1 was the right choice all along!

Finally, if anyone wants some old Eldar, Sisters of Battle, a Lahmian Vampire or some other old fantasy bits, please have a look at http://ogforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=3950.msg59089#new (http://ogforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=3950.msg59089#new) and help me reduce my storage needs!

Bowmen look good though, and Bertand and co are cool models.

You still have at least one competitor/cohort, I have been painting my Foresaken for Month 1 this weekend.

T Minus...5...

Right, the end of the month is approaching and disaster has struck in the Bretonnian camp.  I have run out of Calthan Brown (which I use for the bases) and bought some Mournfang Brown which apparently replaces it.  It doesn't, it's much redder.  So, the archers are on hold whilst I order some Army Painter Leather Brown, which the internet assures me is the same as the old Calthan shade.

I have (almost!) finished the Marauder Horsemen:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-26172159_zpsf68c9c0e.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-26172159_zpsf68c9c0e.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-07-26172225_zps78636b98.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-07-26172225_zps78636b98.jpg.html)

I just need to highlight the eyes on the horses and add some modelling chain between the axes on the champ model.  Irritatingly, I've realised that if I want to take Warriors to London Calling...I need to have them painted, so the WoC are out of the Tale, leaving my mighty Blood Angels to carry the torch!

I've also all but finished the Death Company now, again just some minor highlights on the blood drops (to make them 'jewels') and a bit of gold to cover the yellow on the bare-headed guy's shoulder pad.

There will be blood (angels)....

So, Month 1 saw me paint up some Death Company and a Chaplain for a total of 265pts, this month I've got a Baal Predator up to 'tabletop' standard, will add some battle damage beyond the paint chips and paint in the jewels over the next week if I have time.  I'm then off to Vienna for a week so need to get this month's work in early!

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/2014-08-14104024_zps3351a0ed.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/2014-08-14104024_zps3351a0ed.jpg.html)

The Baal Predator is a tank that can scout (and therefore Outflank), awesome.  Assault cannon and two heavy bolters means lots of pew pew and on a tank that can move 12" and still fire off everything, nice.

I'm struggling with list building at the moment as I want a bit of everything, some Death Company, lots of tanks *and* jump pack marines and just keep running out of points.   Anyways, WIP shot up, back to the grindstone.

Decision, Decisions...

So, this month has seen my triumphant return to the world of Warhammer with a supporting role in the end of the WFB Campaign (3 stegs make a mess of anything they hit.  TACTICS.) and a fair bit of painting...but no pictures at the mo because the further 5 Marauder Cavalry and 2 Chariots are still in the base painted stage.  8 days to go but I'm away at a wedding this weekend so it's touch and go whether I'll get them done by October.

Which leads me onto a tricky decision.  I've signed up for London Calling, which should be very fun, but am intending to take a WoC list which is...really...slow...going on the painting front.  I still need another 5 Marauder Cav, Wolfric, a small Marauder infantry block, plus knights, crushers, 2 chimeras (need to be converted!), a daemon prince (yep, another conversion needed) and of course movement trays...

I just don't see it getting done in 5 and a bit weeks, one of which I'm off to Marrakech for!  So, the decision:

1) Withdraw from London Calling, paint the Warriors without the pressure

2) Go to London Calling with Skaven

3) Rage quit all Warhammer (basically Option 1 but the Warriors won't get painted  :wink;m::)

Option 2 would be doable as I've got lots of ratties painted, plenty for slaves/clan rat blocks, plus Stormvermin/Plague Monks, a Doomwheel, gutter runners aplenty, censer bearers and weapon teams.  It's just a case of drawing up a list that's somehow competitive *and* not just 6 Dice Dreaded...of the 3 big toys (Doomwheel, Cannon and Abom) it's only the Abom that'd need painting so the project becomes a bit more likely but I'm still concerned about my awful work schedule preventing me from actually play testing the darn thing.

I can't choose, c'mon OGgers, think for me!

Not that Skaven aren't great. And you don't need to playtest an Abom, you just point it at whatever you want to die.

Ratties drawing ahead, I don't fancy borrowing models and it'll give me the boost to finish at least one painted Skaven list,

I'm thinking of going Skyre heavy and leaving the Abom at home (Skullcannons make Aboms cry...) - 2 Doomwheels and 2 Cannons is horrendous...and only 480pts.  A few slave blocks with Warlocks + toys to provide speedbumps and then clan rats with banners and weapon teams to keep the theme going.  Oh and jezzails, because they've never let me down*

I'm even tempted to take Ikit Claw as the general...assuming I'll mainly be facing Daemons/Warriors/Ogres and Dark Elf Warlock spam all of whom Dreaded is (pretty much) pointless against.

Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: Pip on September 23, 2014, 08:38:39 pm
QuoteI'm even tempted to take Ikit Claw as the general

Don't do it! He costs 85pts more than a Grey Seer and a warpfire thrower, has one less magic level, and can blow himself up in the magic phase AND the shooting phase.

He'd be a laugh if he were about half the points, but as it is the Seer just has him beat hands-down... only thing he's got going for him are combat stats, which any dedicated combat character will still tear through no problem. Classic case of jack of all trades, master of none.

Don't forget, the Dreaded 13th is a choice. If the opponent doesn't have any juicy infantry targets, don't take it! You'll get more spells with a Seer than with Ikit, you still have access to all of Ruin, and you get Plague too (which has lots of anti-armour spells).

Also, as a dare (and while you still can, if the End Times fluff is anything to go by for the next Skaven book)... take a Fellblade caddy. You know you want to see Skullcrushers get torn apart by a lone Skaven!

Plague always ruins my day when I play Skaven.

Post by: TkaiC on September 23, 2014, 10:01:19 pm
Mike, even I think bringing Vermy along to this tournament is a bad call!

Pip, I like the idea of a Fellblade loony.  One in three chance of it going badly wrong every turn but it's super killy when the dice are kind.  The Fellblade was used in Nagashizzar so I could Tomb King up my Skaven from their dull sand bases easily enough.  Fluff wise the Fellblade was before Clan Pestilens so I'll leave out Monks and Plague, even though they are ace.

Rough list idea -

2500 lets me have a seer, fellblade caddy *and* a bargain basement warlord to act as general, which is tempting.

Heroes - BSB and Multiple Warlock Engineers, mainly non magical to carry various toys, one Warp Lightning dude, Assassin is tempting but probably too pricey.

Core - Only a couple of Slave blocks (30 strong isn't too cheesey) to give me the chaff but stop it being overly dull, then 3 clanrat blocks each with a weapons team, maybe a stormvermin block, all full command to take my Fortitude up to 5 or 6.  Also...Nightrunners. Probably awful (they are, I've tried to use them before) but 2 attacks base, a kind of Vanguard and throwing stars may be helpful.  Somehow.

Special - Jezzails and Gutter Runners

Rare - To Abom or not to Abom?  I'm leaning towards not, but they do force the opponent to deal with them in a way nothing else really does.  Still, Doomwheels are pretty good at that too, until they go crazy.

Sounds like a more interesting list than the net standard. I think an A-bomb is worth it though
Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: Pip on September 24, 2014, 09:42:33 am
The only time the Abom's not going to be hella dangerous for the opponent to deal with is vs. flaming cannons. That's only two army books and you probably won't see many dwarfs, so I'd say go for it if you've got the points. Even against daemons you can cannon off their skullcannons.

Re: every consideration of "not too cheesy" - it's a zero-comp event, just go for it. Even if you lose every game, a hard-fought loss feels so much better than being curb-stomped by some guy who isn't playing by the same mental rules. (So if you want to field more slaves, I'll happily lend you some of my Skaven to fill out the numbers).

Also, perhaps some Globadiers? Wound on a 4+, no armour. Suck it skullcrushers.

You can always use your Seer as your General though, no need for the 90 point tax. And I wouldn't worry about the 13th anyway, not when you're Skitterleaping your Fellblade-Warlord and various Engineers everywhere. :)

(not that this is necessarily advice for actually winning... I'm probably not the man for that kind of advice!)
Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: Pip on September 24, 2014, 11:34:11 am
Warlord's got higher Ld than the Seer, so he'll automatically be general if you don't take 2 - same reason you can't put an Oldblood on general duty in an army that has a Slann. Not to mention that the cheapo Warlord is easy to hide at the back of a unit, whereas the Seer is liable to be a prime target for the enemy and blow himself to smithereens at the first opportunity.
Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: underscore on September 24, 2014, 11:50:25 am
You're forgetting 'because Skaven' - Seers are the same Ld as a General.

I mean, fair enough with the risk of blowing yourself up but I'd probably rather take 90 more points of something else though - there should be enough target saturation with WLCs, Abombs and Doomwheels (plus a few other toys) to keep the guy hidden for most of the game.
Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: Pip on September 24, 2014, 01:10:04 pm
Oh really? I thought Seers were Ld6. Probably remembering that from the last book. Fair enough - 90pts is certainly useful to have spare.
Title: Re: 3D6" From Rage Quit - 2014 Edition
Post by: TkaiC on September 24, 2014, 07:20:10 pm
I've not had much luck with globadiers, the short range has meant I struggle to get more than 1 round of shooting off with them (my poor manouvering being the main problem) and with BS3 they just don't rack up the wounds.  For the price of 4 globadiers I get a Warlock Engineer with a one shot template template version of the same weapon that I can Skitterleap into the right place.

The plan for the second Warlord is to keep the leadership bubble alive once Mr Seer has merrily thrown himself down a hole/been sniped early doors, once the LD7's gone all those checks get a lot harder! 90pts saved would be good

The reason I'm thinking of running minimal slaves is
(a) Clan rats can have banners
(b) Weapon teams = fun (although very expensive for what they usually do...die pointlessly)

Rares are where Skaven are made of win and points wise I can have a lot of cool stuff -  Abom, 2 Cannons and a Doomwheel looks...horrid.

Back of a fag packet 1 Warlord list:
Seer (Scroll & 4+ Ward)
Warlord (Fellblade)

3x Warlock Engineer (1 Rocket, 1 Globe, 1 Ruby Ring)
1x Warlock Engineer (lvl 1, Condenser)
BSB (Obsidian Trinket)

3x 20 Clan Rats, Full Command, Shields (1x Ratling Gun, 1x Warpthrower, 1x Mortar)
2x 30 Slaves

2x 5 Jezzails
3x 5 Gutter Runners (Slings, Poison)

Abom
2x Cannon
Doomwheel
It's a simple castle list, the Gutter Runners are either scouting chaff or ambushing war machine hunters depending on opponents.  A Skitterleap each turn to get Captain Failblade or one of the 2 suicide warlocks into place whilst the flanks are guarded by the two random movement dudes.  I'll give it a run out but I think the Seer as General may be a bad thing...

Right, this post will be edited with some painted models this evening, but first, some learning points from my game against Mike's Empire yesterday.

1) I forgot that I actually have 4 Warlock Engineers in my list and so played without the one with the Condenser (extra Channel on a 5+) which would've helped. A lot.

2) I forgot Skaven Slaves don't run, they explode and prevent over-run.  This would've helped.  A lot.

3) Fellblade vs Demigryphs = dead Demis.

4) Fellblade vs Warlord holding the Fellblade = kills himself with literally the last roll of the game.  Classic.

5) I'm really rusty on WFB.  This is worrying with 5 weeks til a probably very competitive tournament and only a week til list submission!

EDIT - Here's are some painted models as promised:

Skaven aren't known for their accuracy, but 2 units of 5 Jezzails seem to be pretty effective at pinging wounds off heavily armoured targets:

I just need to find another 7 at a non-ridiculous price in the next couple of weeks...  :endit:

And, in the oh so likely event they fail, more barrels = more fun:

Got to love some classic Skaven. If I had more time I would so start a Skaven army again. Very cool matey.

Remember though that exploding Slaves don't prevent overrunning any more - that was in that weird, wonderful phase where GW went a bit mad with some of the rules in a FAQ - I believe that things are back to normal now (same with Unstable units).

Think I've got either 5 or 6 painted Jezzails on a shelf at home - would be happy to lend them to you for the tourney.

Glad to hear the Fellblade had a fun time - always used to think it was massive overkill, but in the current meta it seems like a hilarious antidote to all the monstrous cav spam. Bonus points if you can get it into a gutstar!

Taking down a CoK bus (with all the characters) would also be highly amusing

Skaven are probably my favourite race, model wise, hence sticking with their nefarious but generally ineffective plans!  The old models remind me of the weasels in the 1983 Wind in the Willows film...

I was only 1 when that came out but it's clearly the root of this trauma that's taken over my adult years!

And yes, the Fellblade is *the* answer to Monstrous Cav, I'm hoping to see how it does against Plague Toads this Thursday.  I7 is really good, shame there's no way to up his number of attacks (although with D6 wounds I can see why there's not!)

@Pip - With my tight painting schedule and the stupid price of Jezzails then a unit of 5 would be a huge help actually.

I'll bring them down the club after I get back. Hopefully there'll be a day we're both down, otherwise I can just leave them there for you.

I wouldn't hope for much against G's toads, that list is as mean as it gets. Interesting question, though... does the Fellblade force rerolls on regen saves? I think they are technically a ward but I'm not 100% on that.

Regen isn't a ward i'm afraid.. same with other trickster shard not working against regen... but with d6 wnds i wouldn't worry too much about that lol bound to fail a regen save or two  :wink;m::

Ouch. In that case I wouldn't back him against the toads... on average he'll get two hits, they'll save one, and then he only has a 50% chance to actually score a toad kill thanks to their 4 wounds.

Skaven!  Armoured, Chariot driving Skaven!

Now, unlike a certain other regularly updated painting log on this forum, I don't procrastinate.  Never.  Nope.  When I have a tight deadline to meet, such as needing to paint up a couple of big projects, such as a Warp Lightning Cannon and an Abomination, I knuckle down and put in the time.

Ta da:

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/12102014003_zpsc1c8ff05.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/12102014003_zpsc1c8ff05.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/12102014001_zpseaead226.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/12102014001_zpseaead226.jpg.html)

Ok, ok, they aren't really Skaven.  Hard to see how chariots would work in small tunnels too.  These are instead 2 old style metal Chaos Chariots for my WoC army and were sitting on the painting table in a half painted state for a few weeks so I decided to assemble and finish them off, barring the snow bases.

I have almost finished assembling the Abom, it just needs some more green stuff work where I've replaced the steam engine/wheel part with some flesh and hair.  Once the current blob of GS is dry, it's on to undercoating and (hopefully) I'll have it painted before I jet off for a week leaving me with just the following 'to do' list:

(0.  Paint abom)
1.  Assemble and paint 2nd Cannon
1.5 Come up with genius unit filler for jezzails
2.  Assemble and paint genius unit filler for jezzails
3. Assemble appropriate movement trays
4. Base everything (not actually that much, just the big stuff and movement trays to do)
5. Varnish it all
6.  Weep as metal miniatures chip anyway
7.  ??
8.  Profit

And, whilst I worry about the incoming Blood Angels Codex I've found that at some point ages ago I bought a Tau Rapid Insertion Force, presumably of Ebay when I wanted to be a power gamer.  It's on the furthest of my back burners, but if anyone doesn't play Tau but has some models I'm in the market for them...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the END TIMES

End Times Skaven are out in January and I am officially quite excited.  However, before that, there's time for me to enthusiastically rush into another ill conceived project after picking up a bargain from, in this case, Gumtree.  I'm going for a Space Wolf army, having split Stormclaw with Matt and 10 Fenrisian Wolves for a tenner, wins.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/20141227_212717_zps4bc3f6e2.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/20141227_212717_zps4bc3f6e2.jpg.html)

Simple case of Dheneb Stone/Charadon Granite over a black undercoat, drybrush of Astronomican Grey, Agrax Earthshade wash, Pallid Wytch Flesh for the skin parts, pick out the eyes and teeth and then a heavy drybrush of Astronomican again.  Quick n easy and looks alright I think.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/20141227_212747_zps4ffa23ae.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/20141227_212747_zps4ffa23ae.jpg.html)

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/20141227_212757_zpsf5783888.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/20141227_212757_zpsf5783888.jpg.html)

Love the poses on the models, really dynamic.  Also done a test Bloodclaw, the first of a unit of 15 who, along with Lukas The Trickster will ride in a Landraider.  The rest of the army is going to be furry...Thunderwolf Cav including Canis and Harald.  Add in a Grey Hunter squad in a Razorback and a couple of Lone Wolves and I think the army's done.  Quite tempted to shove Bjorn in as well for a suitably saga-esque overload of characters but the Venerable Dread gets the same job done for a fair bit cheaper.

(http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/tkaic/20141227_212821_zps358210b0.jpg) (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/tkaic/media/20141227_212821_zps358210b0.jpg.html)

Sorry for the blurry shot.  The ginger hair hasn't worked, think blondes are the way forward.

Very nice job and good to see an alternative 40k army at the club. Question is, are you actually going to play 40k in 2015? :)

My new Blood Angels need a run out and if you're game I'll be using the Barbara Woodhouse Strikeforce BA Formation vs your dogs;

- All BA have the "Heel" Special Rule. All enemy SW units within 12" at the start of any Player Turn must take a Ld test with a -2 modifier. Any unit that fails may not move or charge.
- All BA units cause "Play Dead". In the BA shooting and/or assault phase, after a target is chosen but before any dice to hit are rolled, the target SW unit must take a Ld check at -2. If the unit fails it immediately lies on the floor pretending to be dead. All subsequent to-hit rolls in either the shooting and/or assault phase automatically hit as the target unit goes from very nearly dead... to very actually dead.
- All BA units with the Psyker rule have an additional power, "Squat of Russ".  Malediction, 18", S*. Enemy unit must take an immediate Ld test at -2. If the unit fails the squad either cocks their legs or squats to take a shit on the battlefield. The unit cannot perform any voluntary action in its next Turn whilst the model in the unit with either the IC or Character rule goes around scooping up the mess.

You forgot what happens when I pass...said mess results in cluster mines as your Angels panic over getting their boots befouled.

Space Vikings will drunkenly charge their giant wolves at you f'sure...the slight issue of them having Blood Angel allies won't be a problem, right?  (Seriously, 5 man assault squad with free drop pod and 2x melta, oh, and 2x melta pistols? All the win, right there.)

I've also started painting my Traitor Guard...3 sentinels are in the minor conversion/base painted stage.  Pics next weekend...games...the week after?

Cheers Matt!  Snow all the way for these guys, need to buy some cork to add decent rocks to the bases and then they should be simple enough.

In the meantime, here's my WIP for my traitor guard.  The plan is to use the old metal Catachans, unconverted, whilst the various vehicles will be more...rancid.

Like the Traitor Guard, the rice is inspired for maggots. Almost tempting me to do something Nurgley myself - other than blowing my nose!
