Seeing as I bought all this stuff off OG only fair I give something back.

Right as everyone knows the key to getting an army right is a few tester models.  To an extent my lizzies idea all came about because of this paint job on a completely unrelated model.

I'd not painted red for years and actually found it was ok, which made me decide to drop the cash on some lizzies.

So moving on to the right race, as I was hitting up ebay for as many terradons/krox/other direct onlies as I could find I ended up winning a bid which came with 32 of the old plastic skins, 16 odd old saurus, a saly and a terradon (for the princely sum of £5).  Which gave me a bunch of test models.  I'd also picked up a couple of krox and am now up to 11 terradons (perhaps a tad overkill!)

I started by painting up a krox using traditional painting styles, just to work out what scheme I fancied. I do have an airbrush so everything gets sprayed red first to give a nice even base coat, so even with more traditional painting it's then just picking out detail and inking to give it depth.

As I was pretty happy with that I started on working out how to get a quick cheat to turn this out quickly, obviously lizzies suit dipping really well, so I got myself along to B&Q and checked out their range of wood stains.  After a few experiments (tried 2 B&Q own brands and one Ronseal) I settled on B&Q antique pine for the skinks and will use the darker Ronseal walnut for the big Kroxes and stuff to give them a darker tone.

First of the skinks done and came out well enough, here's a stage by stage on it, basecoat, dip, small pick out of details and matt varnish.

I've now done 32 of these guys over the course of last night and an hour or so today, so probably my fastest turn around of this volume of models ever.  And the really good thing, the new edition skinks don't even have the silly loin cloths so will be even faster, which is fantastic!

I spent most of today assembling a steg and 12 saurus who have now been undercoated (Halfords white primer) ready for the airbrush treatment.  The plan is to try and blitz this as quickly as possible so I can get the army on the table, so don't expect any fabulous paintjobs.

Looking good fella, keep it up!

Dave

Of my purchases I've so far done - 12 saurus and most of a steg (sans crew).

I've assembled the 8 saurus cav (2 to be scar vets), one temple guard (to be a scar vet) and 8 more saurus.  So basically I need to assemble all my skinks and the second steg and my army will be built (still need a few more saurus but can proxy with temple guard for now or use the old edition saurus, but they look rubbish).

From fleabay I've got a 11 terradons, 2 Krox (I want at least 2 more) and a sally.

So I've pretty much got everything I'll need for my army and the painting is going really quickly, the models I've painted have come out quite nicely so I'm well happy.  Off to London this weekend (just Sat/Sun) so going to be pictures up next week.

I decided to go for scenic bases to make them look a bit different.  Plus I've just ordered a load of jungle style foliage from another site   So hopefully the combo of those two will actually give the army that extra something that makes up for the relatively simple paintjob.

I'm quite pleased with how quickly this is likely to turn into a viable army, a decent model count and simple to paint whilst still looking fairly nice.  The trick will be to see how the combination of my Skinks and Saurus being Red will fit with the bigger monsters being different colours.  Hoping to make them clash but not look out of place.

And to contrast the red lizards I'm going to do the other big beasties in different colours, which brings me to... The first steg:

Due to the light it's come out a bit more orange than it actually is, I'll see if I can get some better pictures in some better light some time.

Not done the crew as yet since they'll be done batch with my other skinks once they're built but the priest will get some extra love to make him stand out a little (as if being on the back of a giant dinosaur isn't enough!).

hell the actual enjine itself look amazing! steg is good too, but my brother would kill for that howda. looking forward to the rest of the army taking shape

Hmm, seeing the pics on my screen at work they actually look about right, I'll need to have a play with my monitor at home, it's distorting colours again!

The engine and howdah were the really easy bits!

Engine - Dwarf bronze, wash with Chestnut Ink.  Once dry I then put burnished gold over all the raised bits and then a few extreme highlights with silver.

Howdah - Stone - Undercoat - Halfords grey primer, wash badab black (yes that simple)
Wood/fabric - Coat D'arms Mid stone, wash with devlan mud, fabric then coated with snakebite leather to make it look different from the wood.  (again, dead simple).

Odd to say when it is a gigantic dinosaur but you have a nice naturalistic touch, looks good.
