Title: Cube Draft
Post by: JJ on April 15, 2014, 09:54:58 am
For those who do not know Cube Draft is a booster draft variant in which the pool of cards is a predetermined set of cards chosen for the purpose of drafting them. The pool of cards is known as a Cube and usually contains a minimum of 360 cards to accommodate an eight-player booster draft. The cards used in a Cube are usually unique so that no card appears more than once in a draft. Typically, the card pool is an amalgamation of powerful cards from throughout the history of Magic, although the card pool can be whatever theme is desired.

I have spent a fair while building a cube. I haven't included some of the newer cards as yet but it is still playable as it stands.

Mine consists of 450 cards so there are always 90 not included so the set always changes.

I need to check the online google doc version of the list, when it is updated I will post it here.

At that stage I am happy to run a few cube draft sessions. Need 8 locked in players though. I will supply everything down to the lands. They are all sleeved to match the cube sleeves which speeds it all up considerably.

So if you are keen to play with some of the more powerful cards in magic without paying the ££££ to do it, this is ideal! See the combos and enjoy soem insane situations!

If we could find a good date I'd be up for this for sure...
Title: Re: Cube Draft
Post by: JJ on April 28, 2014, 04:48:30 pm
Can we lock in the 10th of May as a date for this?

I will rationalise the list against the cards and prepare packs etc prior to arriving provided everyone is ok with that?
Title: Re: Cube Draft
Post by: JJ on May 06, 2014, 10:21:25 pm
All... I have updated the list. Seem some changes I want to make already but this is definitely playable!

(Faulty link removed-Ol)

Enjoy. I think a part of the prizes will be 1 - 2 changes to the cube card set to keep it differing every time.

Don't know what half the cards are, but I saw the Avatar of Woe (my all time favourite card)

Does this work like a normal draft?

Foil avatar of woe!

Just like normal draft, only you do not keep the cards at the end. I will pre shuffle and try and deal the packs prior to arriving!

Actaully hat reminds me... I need to bring a print out of the rules for the full art cards and foriegn cards.

Manavault in german is not so easy to understand.

I have a better lsit which showed which were foil, full art, promo, signed etc. Will make that available soon as I find it!

Winning by doing no damage and waiting  for. Your opponent to die to their own manavault is always nice :P

Just to give flavour.

You will see from the % splits the intended way the colours have been built.

Black has a heavy re-animation theme. Mostly spells
White is heavy weenies. Mostly creatures
Red is aggro burn. Pretty even
Blue is control - both counter and board. Good card draw here. Mostly spells
Green is ramp and fatties. Mostly creatures

I have tried to make some obvious splashes: Psycatog with squee for instance. Vengevine with bloodghast and reanimation...

Every colour has a single PW, bar green. There's are jsut not strong enough so they get big creatures and one more card.

PW included are:
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Elspeth, Knight Errant
Liliana of the Veil
Chandra, the Firebrand
Ajani Vengeant
Venser the Sojourner
Karn Liberated
Sarkan Vol

There is very little in the way of fixing to prevent crazy splashes. Essentially in early versions there was a LOT of fixing (signets etc) and it essentailly made green unplayable. Green has the best splash abilities with its land searches and ramp.

As with any limited format, kill spells and evasion are hugely important in this. There are sweepers (damnation, day of judgement, wrath of god, rachet bombs etc.) and there are targeted kill spells and player sacrifice abilities. So you can kill everything if you draft properly. There are 2 shadow creatures. Both are white and are one of whites evasion forms. Probably won't ever add more than that. Blue has Invisible Stalker, green has uncounterable and hexproof / shroud.

There are limited island / mountain walk style creatures.

Flying is there.

Notable artifacts...

All 5 Swords
Batterskull
Jitte

In short, find something to kill artifacts ;)

Also I will murder whoever ultimates karn and goes to time...

Venser is always a questionable, though with enter play abilities he is a nice option to have. Even if it is a simple wall of omens.

His overlooked -2 ability is great in limited also.

There is no guarentee that all cards are in play. 460 cards in the cube and 360 that are used (15*3*8). So 100 sit out. The colour balance then can be skewed because of this.
Title: Re: Cube Draft
Post by: JJ on May 07, 2014, 05:09:40 pm
In short though, I am happy to have input to changes.

I want lingering soulds in there for instance.

The only provison is keeping the mana curve or lowering it. As with anything in limited, if the curve is too high through even one colour, the games drag and get boring. So the lower end keeps it fresh and allows interaction from the first turn.

I'm not sure it matters, the rest of us don't know what any of the cards are anyway, not have the time it look them all up...
It's purely for fun, so not sure it matters, JJ's mini strategy guide contains enough info for all of us. The links are not working for me now, and I only opened it once in my IPad so I don't have a saved copy
Title: Re: Cube Draft
Post by: JJ on May 08, 2014, 11:52:43 am
Most of the cards are not that complicated.

Most if not all of the white 1 drop creatures at 2/1's or 2/2's for 1. or 1/1's for one that get buffed (Loam lion etc).

Burn spells are burn spells...

Keywords people may not have seen:
Shadow
Ninjitsu
Bury
The Untap symbol

Cannot think of any others. Horsemanship is DEFINITELY not in there.

Infect is there and proliferate is on 2 cards.

I suppose, but in cube it's a bit different as all the cards have a similar power level, and it's important to know which card to pick based on what else is in the cube, whereas in draft u just sort of pick the best card of the 15 and make a deck around that because all the packs are random (the cube is too but most of the cards present will appear somewhere) but I guess iv been power cubing too much

Glad you guys enjoyed it!

I am happy to make it a regular thing. No point in building the cube and then have it sit there. I have seen some changes to make already and if there are others that people see while drafting, be sure to let me know.

I do need to cut 10 cards before next time, and add in lingering souls and Geralfs messenger. I may even get grave crawler in there also.

Will sort some details on what comes out and what goes in.

Also if the link wasn't working, try copying and pasting it into your browser. Guys today were saying that was working. I will look into it though.

Thanks again guys. Was a lot of fun and great to be able to use it!

i think most people would agree that the most poweful cards of the last 2 sets are sphinxe's revelation, voice of resurgeance,  courser of kruphix, elspeth sun's champion, thassa, god of the sea (which might not work too well in cube) domri rade, polukranos, world eater, stormbreath dragon (which isnt as good as thundermaw so maybe not), brimaz, king of oreskos, boros reckoner, obzedat, ghost council, blood baron of vizkopa, pack rat, aetherling and heroe's downfall (yes i left out stuff like supreme verdict and thoughtseize  because there are older versions or they are just reprints)

I agree with Gui's list... With a nod to Counterflux, Abrupt Decay and maybe Desecration Deamon (but probably not)

Not sure if M14 is in bounds, if so, Archangel of Thune probably gets a nod (although it may be in there already!)

And abrupt decay and counterflux are good in modern and abrupt decay is good in legacy but the restrictive casting cost of counterflux and the lack of targets of abrupt decay make them not so great in limited (unless there's a string storm theme but I didn't see tendrils or grapeshot so I doubt it)

That is a good list. Geist of St Traft maybe, Deathrite Shaman plays a similar role to Ooze, maybe Kiora. I know it is essentially a reprint but mana confluence would be a possibility as well. I like nightveil specter as a card but not sure how good it is in cube.
Title: Re: Cube Draft

Death rite is good but not at it's best in draft where graveyards aren't as full and there are very few lands there to make mana, Kiora might be good but I don't think she does enough on an empty board, whenever i have played Kiora I could jut ignore her until she was about to become ultimate, and specter is similar to vampire nighthawk in its role but loses out in draft as the casting cost is restrictive if your not in black/blue and the ability isn't that relevant.
Ps Geist is from innistrad so predates this list (but is still a really good card)

Given the lack of response I am assuming that this is not happening on Saturday.

Shame :(
