QuoteItems with lives of their own

The Shifting Sands begins the Ancient Relics cycle and its exploration of the Call of Cthulhu mythos outside the borders of New England. Fervent cultists, sinister magicians, and professors from Miskatonic University all travel into the deserts of Egypt in search of items whose power they believe can draw forth the Ancient Ones, hold them at bay, or siphon their horrible powers.

The Shifting Sands introduces the new Relic card type to the game. These powerful support cards have mysterious histories. Over the course of time, they disappear, then reappear to unleash new chaos upon the world. Relics may leave play, but they never truly disappear forever. Khopesh of the Abyss (The Shifting Sands 16), for example, allows its bearer to unleash death and devastation, but it feeds upon its bearer's strength until the bearer dies and the Khopesh of the Abyss is lost, only to be reshuffled into the deck and return at some future time.

QuoteStories from foreign lands

The 12 new story cards in The Shifting Sands bring additional chaos to Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game with more asymmetrical game effects than previous sets. You still have to think twice about triggering most of their abilities, though it's hard to resist the draw of a story effect as tempting as that on The Seventh Gate (The Shifting Sands 12).
