My First Conversion

I've never done a conversion before, bar swapping High Elf heads between plastic boxes! So I thought given I'm collecting a Warriors of Chaos army now seemed like an appropriate time to start.

Thus I have tried to convert a couple of spawn, and a giant to give them a Mark of Tzeentch. He's my results before any painting.

Chaos Giant:

For the Giant I've moulded a large gash across his chest (originally this had a Flammer arm erupting from it, but it didn't look right - think it's because I don't really like the Flammer models!). I've also added a giant boil/scab with three tentacles bursting out (from the Chaos Spawn set), and I've made a necklace for him with a Tzeentch icon (the icon is from one of the Chaos bitz packs, the chain is from some cheap jewellery from Debenhams!)

On his back he's going to have a Pink Horror in a cage, like some bizarre pet he's captured. This isn't glued together yet for painting hence the white-tac. The Pink Horror is just one from a box whose arms fit through the bars quite well.

First Spawn:

This Tzeentch Chaos spawn is supposed to look like a freakish bird-like spawn, the bird head is so Tzeentch I felt I had to. I like the idea that the Warriors who became these spawn started off growing Tzeentch Daemon parts as if they were on the way to Daemonhood - but then it all went wrong as is with the fickle nature of Tzeentch. The tail is taken from a Screamer - sawn off with a razor saw, I moulded tubes on to connect the tubes from the tail to the spawn's body. There's also a Flammer tendril coming out the chest and the left arm is replaced by the base of a Flammer - a fiery hole on the spawn's arm. I like the fact that this Spawn has no proper arms as such.

Second Spawn:

This spawn is a giant over sized Pink Horror, the head is from a Pink Horror - I've sawn it off with the razor saw and modelled a chin out of green stuff and two horns to go in the arm holes. It also has a large number of Pink Horror hands reaching like the two large ones from the Spawn set. I like the way this creature really looks like it's running at you screaming, and the ridiculous small head - which fits with the idea the mutations become so immense the brain can't cope.

Any way comments and suggestions welcomed, hopefully they'll be painted up in the next millennium so you'll get to see them!

Cheers mate, glad you like - will try and put some work in progress pics up as they come. So far have undercoated them in Chaos Black - well it's a start!

Looking very good for you're first bit of green stuffing! The giant looks like he's reading out loud from his stone (might just be me that thinks like this).

The smoothing into the skin on the giant's gut (the big wound). Looks like you have managed to make it blend well but I'd suggest putting a bit of paint (Grey?) over it so you can see how obvious the join in without the distraction of colour. If it's not as smooth as you'd like a quick rub with some fine (very fine) sand paper will sort it out.

I like the level of thought put in behind each one too this is the kind of modelling that so often is missing. Is the bird head and wings from the spawn sprue as I have never seen it before? The flamer "arm" looks like it could do with a little more GS just to complete the join. On models like this one, with the kinda plug and socket joints, a little too much GS is easier to get away with than too little.

Also if you have used it to "glue" the metal bits in to place they do sometimes pop out (generally with rough treatment) but don't worry about it because the GS rarely tears and you end up with a perfect fit hole for the metal part to be super glued back into.

"The Lord, the Lord Jehovah has given unto you these fifteen... Oy! Ten! Ten commandments for all to obey!"   - Then you model another stone broken by his foot. :-)

Haha, well all it's got on it is a Chaos symbol. Maybe it is a reminder of who he's not supposed to kill or was that who he was supposed to kill - I know Giant's don't suffer from stupidity, but they do stike me as being pretty dumb!

Cheers that's a good idea for next time - looks ok now sprayed black but worth knowing for future.

Yeah they are both from the Spawn - wasn't going to put the wings on at first - just spikes and have it more Screamer like, but it needed the height to make it look less stooped. And with hindsight I like it more with the wings now.

Will have a look at this, I think I finished that join quite late at night! Haha.

I had some trouble gluing the tendrils into the Giant's Green stuff scab. Even though it was plastic to plastic - with a green stuff surround, found super glue held it much better than plastic glue.

Thanks for all the tips mate!

The plan is to get them all done before the Beastman book comes out, so I have a couple of Warriors and Beastman units done (will have to overlook the Mark of Tzeentch if not allowed that in the new Beastman book). However with February fast approaching, and Two Warriors Characters, a Unit of Trolls, and some Movement Trays already crowding the half-finished desk might not make it!
