on the photography thing have you considered putting a bit of white paper on your floor?

Would probably do the same job.

One thing that might get round your issues with the darkness of the desktop photos is if you can set the exposure time on your camera, not sure how standard that function is in antiques, but mine is default at 1/8 of a second exposure but can be set up to 1 second, means it pulls in much more light and if you've got it on a tripod/book jammed in a drawer then it won't pick up any wobble so will be nice and stable.

Not sure if I can change the exposure, could put on night mode, that will draw more light in hmmmm.
