So, with the advent of terms like Battle Forged, Combined Arms Detachment, Allied Detachment, Objective Secured and a plethora of other permutations, it's understandable that the idea of how to build an army for 7th edition is a bit complex. Unless you're playing Unbound, which is basically emptying your entire collection on the table and playing with that, it's actually fairly simple providing you can look past all the different terms.

Found this simple chart online which explains things fairly simply, and hopefully it will be useful for anyone wanting to get into the game new, or for those coming from a different edition and feel a bit bamboozled:

Simple things to remember:

- Combined Arms Detachment is basically the old FOC, so minimum 1 HQ and 2 Troops, the usual amounts of the other slots of 3 Fast Attack, Elite and Heavy), with the added slots of a Fortification and a Lord of War.

- Allied Detachments are basically the same as the old allies in 6th, minimum 1 HQ and 1 Troop with additional slots open in the other areas.

- Combined Arms and Allied Detachments both have Objective Secured, so your Troop units in both of these are super scoring, i.e. they claim an objective even if another unit without Objective Secured is within 3 inches of it. Also, if your CAD is your main detachment and it contains your Warlord, you can re-roll the result on the Warlord Traits table.

- An Allied Detachment cannot be the same as your primary CAD. Basically, factions cannot ally with themselves so you couldn't take a CAD of Space Wolves and ally with an Allied Detachment of Space Wolves. You can, however, still take Dataslates and Formations from the same faction as your Primary, so you could take a Primary CAD of Space Wolves, and take a Space Wolf Formation either from the main Codex or from the Champions of Fenris Supplement. Also an Allied Detachment may not contain your Warlord.

- Formations and Dataslates are not automatically Objective Secured with their Troops, and specific ones will clarify whether they are or not. For example, the Tyranid Formations that came out don't have Objective Secured barring their Gargoyle Formation, which specifically states those units have Objective Secured (and so are super scoring).

- And a general rule to always remember is EVERYTHING scores in 7th barring units that state that they can never score, e.g. Death Company.

Hope this is useful :beer2:
"Sanguinius. It should have been him. He has the vision and strength to take us to victory, and wisdom to rule once victory is won. For all his aloof coolness, he alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood. Each of us carries part of our father - Sanguinius holds it all." Horus

Would that mean that the scoring rules are similar to 4th edition where your elites etc... Score as well?
Also (sorry if this is dumb but I don't actually own a copy of 7th ed so don't really know the rules ) do all troop choices in your primary detachment always count as super scoring or are there limitations (vehicles etc...) ?

No problem matey.

Very similar to 4th Ed in that everything scores (Elites, Fast Attack etc) but with some exceptions, e.g. Zooming Flyers, Swooping MCs and one or two others. Troops are always super scoring in a CAD or Allied Detachment, as are their dedicated transports (Rhinos, Razorbacks etc) - and you don't need embarked Troops for the transports to count.

It's also worth mentioning that 7th Ed Codices list dedicated transports as a separate data slate to the faction you're running. Meaning you can take a Razorback as it's own entry without having to pay the infantry tax first. They are also a dedicated option under the relevant unit entry if applicable, but you can take them on their own. Only the Troop versions count a super scoring though, unless stated otherwise.

So far Orks and Wolves have the separate transport data slate, but future books will follow suit.

So am I right in thinking that eldar are strictly unbeatable not just mostly now, as wave serpents and war walkers are scoring?

Wave Serpents are still a bit bent and GW have admitted as much with both the Eldar and Tau codices generally. They have received a boost with the new CAD rules but other books have also got a bump so the difference compared to 6th is marginal IMHO.

Don't think many are too scared of War Walkers even in this edition but they're still useful.

Eldar are not unbeatable by any stretch.
