OK so as I am not as well versed in 40k as a lot of others I would like some input into what you guys would like for an event on the 14th June. The new edition will be out so whether people want to go nuts with unbound rules or what - everything is possible and let us see what most people want to do and it will happen.

There will be a table or two for other things happening but the room will be largely dedicated to 40k event.

Think we should start gently for our first event, given the changes not just in the rules, but also with how you build your army.

My suggestion just to kick start the chat would be:

- No to Unbound: We can always do a specific Unbound event once people are down with the new edition and fancy just a crazy few games one weekend.
- Start with Battle-Forged and one Primary Detachment only (i.e. one Codex, no allies effectively, no formations and pretty much the standard FOC we all know from before)
- Fortifications yes, but let's leave out the Fortress of Redemption and the Aquila Strongpoint (seeing as buildings can score as well as those two just being massive..?!), unless they are just part of board terrain generally and have no real bearing on the games.
- No Lords of War to start with.
- Somewhere between 1500-2000pts.

We could also impose OG Comp from the start but I think we all need to play a few more games generally to get the gist of how things have changed over 5-7 turns, and then maybe revise or update OG Comp to fit future events. Our focus should still be having fun first and foremost, and to get as many people involved as possible. The above could be our standard format (give or take), and then we can run side-events for those who are interested in playing something wackier from time-to-time (i.e. Unbound etc).

Bear in mind that "hopefully" there are some FAQs coming down the pipe as well (and they better come soon), as certain wargear and Codex specific stuff conflicts or doesn't work in the 7th Ed format. Whilst it probably won't happen, we may need to think about the Psychic Phase for example and the balance with books that can roll a ridiculous amount of Warp Charge dice from the off.

For various reasons, people lost interest/faith with 40k for a little while, so it would be good to "start afresh" to get the enthusiasm back, and we have always ever been the judges on what format our OG events should be. I see this being an evolving beast to start with, until we get to a point where, through regualr weekly games etc, we come up with a style that suits everyone and is as fair as we can make it (appreciating this will never be 100% of course).

Thoughts?
"Sanguinius. It should have been him. He has the vision and strength to take us to victory, and wisdom to rule once victory is won. For all his aloof coolness, he alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood. Each of us carries part of our father - Sanguinius holds it all." Horus

That all sounds pretty sensible for me - after some discussion has been had concerning this I would happy to have someone else put together a comp and rules for this event in a standardised format to be used.

I've not got the new rules yet but I'd say keep it simple is a good starting point. Games are likely to take longer so lets say 1,500 points and I agree with Seb that no allies, FW etc makes sense. Other than than lets go straight out the book - we can develop our club comp based on the experience

Spent the day reading through the new book and have to say I'm quiet looking forward to the new 40K...

Especially want to try out the Maelstrom of War missions adding a completely new twist on how to get Vp's in the game!

ie. 6 objectives on the board, players draw cards with 16 different ways of gaining vp's

Lets see how the games Thursday play out but seriously think that's the way to go for Planet OG's maybe even write our own and use that to comp unbound forces!

Need to see how the new Psychic phase works out with what seems like a drift to the fantasy way of doing thing a bit interesting shall have to see how much it effects the games and whether we see armies of Uri Geller in the 40,000 century breaking the game  ],-) Unbound Nova spamming deep striking Librarians in droppods anyone  :vader:

BTW new 'allies' chart looks better as less battle brother and allies of convenience it seems  and Desperate allies as well as the (the wonderfully named) Come the Apocalypse detachments potentially do nothing on the roll of a 1 that could cause merry hell...

Unfortunately I can't make the 14th (I'm at a family wedding), but have some thoughts on comp.

I'd keep a lot of the comp Ol put together. 40k doesn't seem to have changed too much and that comp was all about stopping people spamming.

I also agree with Mike that 1500pt would be a good limit to begin with.

Beyond that, I think what Seb and Mike have suggested (i.e. no allies etc) might be a little heavy handed to begin with. Imho, given that we're all getting to grips with the new edition out atm I'd rather use a process of trial and error to comp things that we have found to be too powerful than theoryhammering everything and taking a lot of the flavour out of the game. Bear in mind for the most part we are also quite a good group at self-policing ourselves (during 6th ed I saw one Waveserpent spam list played regularly and non of the crazy Deathstars at the club).

Goatboy on Bell of Lost Souls put some trial comp up, I think it makes some good points (http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2014/05/goatboys-40k-what-heck-should-we-do-now.html). Things from it I like:

- a) List cannot be taken from more than 2 sources. That way most armies will be taken from one codex plus allies or forgeworld or dataslates etc. This isn't quite as restrictive as what Seb suggested but doesn't let people go crazy. Remember if we're using smaller points limits as well that should stop people taking to many silly combos;

- b) Lords of War allowed by can be up to a maximum of 35% of your points cap In a 1500pt game this would be no LoW over 525pts.

- c) Allies are ok (taking into account other restrictions) as long as they are not 'come the apocolypse'

- Psychic phase I don't think we should do too much with until we've played it through a few times Some of the spells are nasty, but they are also much harder to cast than previously. This could go either way as long as nobody takes one of the daemon spawn lists doing the rounds.

Likewise, FAQs came out today but they don't deal with some of the big questions with the psychic phase (e.g. how shadows in the warp now works) so we might also want to wait for them too.

- I like the idea of the mission cards and would like to give them a go.

I'm not really up to speed with what the competitive end if 40k is up to but I'm keen to give it a go...

I inclined to go with as minimal comp as possible while we test the new game out - and while I think we will have to revert to some clearly, I think starting from a clean slate in club games is best.

Just my personal opinion though!!! :)
In the style of Tom Hale... F*ck Ushabti!!!

Agree with Matt, regardless of new rules, avoid spam in all cases...
And Unbound is a big no no in any competitive play....

Oliver has played a few games already at his local GW, give him a shout, PM me if you want his number (he is never on forum)

The more i read over the rules the move i think maelstrom missions are the way forward.
One think we'll need to think about is dead cards 'ie. You draw kill the enemy flyer and he doesnt have one) thinking one youve draw the 3 cards and check you opponents list you should be able to discard dead cards and redraw!
Also thinking we add come the apocolypse detactments to the ban list as that should reduce the amount of filth in bound armies and finally a cap on warp charges might not be a bad idea!
But my thinking is after tonight we let people try and break the comp over the coming weeks prior to the Planet OG and see what jumps out at us!

katarr

Ok, so can one of you type up a basic light comp in here then others can comment and we can tweak it for final product.
