Title: Kill Team Campaign - In the grim darkness of the future there is only...cake?
Post by: TkaiC on April 06, 2014, 11:38:11 am
Short version - I will be running a Kill Team campaign, please sign up.  If you win the campaign, you get a cake.  It will run over 2 Saturday OGs (if the club's still going...) and comprise 2 one day tournaments (with a mix of 1v1 and multiplayer) and 4 campaign games, so 2 months total.  Kill Team's also quick enough that you can play cards/boardgames/etc on the same night whilst still getting some 40k shenanigans under your belt

Long Version - Right, campaigns are tricky but can be very fun.  In my mind, the big problem is the drop in interest as campaigns progress, mainly driven by the difficulty in actually getting matches in.  This is made much worse when some people (and I'm more guilty of this than most) have to cancel late in the day due to work/life commitments, games get delayed and you end up playing the same list in a not particularly different scenario whenever you do get to the club.

The answer to all of life's problems is, of course, Kill Team rules.  And a prize.

Ah Kill Team.  200pts, restrictive rules that, when combined with The Golden Rule* mean you have to think about your army in terms of individual soldiers and what they'll bring to the table.  It's great, really, really great.  And it's quick, so even if you're only able to make one slot, you should have comfortable time for KT and then some Magic or whatever as well.

The other great thing in life is cake.  As a prize, the winning player/side will get a cake, made by me.

My plan would be to have a Kill Team tourney at each Saturday OG - this would not necessarily be 1 vs 1, we had a cracking multi player, fluf compliant game yesterday of 2 v 2...where only one player could win so Matt and Seb ended up stabbing eachother heartily in the back in the last round.  There would also be 2 campaign turns between each Saturday, so 2 further games where your victories not only boost your leader as usual but may win your Kill Team fabulous prizes, in terms of extra bonuses.  It's therefore in your interest to play in the campaign turns which will be heavily narrative driven with custom fluff written by yours truly to explain why whichever forces we have are where they are and what's going on.

What you need to do:
Sign up on this thread
Commit to playing campaign turns AND on Saturday OGs**
Obey The Golden Rule*
Have an awesome Kill Team.  No grey plastic allowed.  Unless you're grey knights I guess.  Or iron warriors. Or, darn, just make them look pretty dammit.

What I will do:
Write lots of fluff to link missions with a narrative arc
Ensure compliance with The Golden Rule*
Do the admin of the campaign, so lists of armies, upgrades and fabulous prizes won
Arbitrarily decided who has the best looking Kill Team and give them an in-game bonus as a reward
Act as a stand in when I can to ensure people can get  lots of games in**
Make a cake for the winner.  No, really, I'm not bad at baking, you can get a 40K themed cake.  If you don't like cake, it can be a pie.

*Don't be a d*ck

**Right, we all have lives of some description and it can be tricky making lots of games.  To alleviate this and provided there're enough numbers, I'll play Traitor/Imperial Guard Kill Teams and be available for games in the second week of each fortnight as a safety net to stop people not being able to get a game in.

I'm certainly interested (as long as no one minds playing with a work in progress team), just a couple of questions:

Would the basic army list be static for the campaign?
Are the games quick enough so I could conceivably get in both games in during one weekday session?
Would having a Chimera be considered a violation of The Golden Rule (I have no idea how some units play at this scale! :) )?
Title: Re: Kill Team Campaign - In the grim darkness of the future there is only...cake?
Post by: TkaiC on April 06, 2014, 02:24:40 pm
@underscore - Chimeras are fine, the KT rules allow vehicles so long as they've a combined armour value of less than 33 (Front+Side+Rear) so Rhinos are fine, Vindicators...no.

Army lists can be altered, although there will be a hold on this within campaign turns (the two week period), I think Kill Team is pretty new to all of us so it's better to be able to try out something a bit off the wall compared to 'normal' 40k (I'm looking at a Rough Rider/Ratling list at the moment) but then be able to change it if the cunning plan really wasn't (so, my Rough Rider/Ratlings...)

Here's the old rule pack as a starting point - http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3460063a_Kill_Team_Rules_Pack_2013.4.pdf

New rules (which we'll use) have more missions and the way specialists work has changed - you choose a theme for your specialist, such as Dirty Fighter, and then pick from a list of skills linked to that rather than having a Fleshbane sniper.  Otherwise I think it's pretty much the same.

In! Obviously dependent on Saturday availability, but sure I can make something work.

Bring forth the Ultramarines!

Actually Matt, humble tactical marines are pretty decent in Kill Team - the best armour available and decent stats plus the Chapter Tactics Ultramarines boost makes them a sound choice - you don't even have to paint anything new!

April 19th, Planetfall.

Ok, roll up roll up, put your names and armies down for the KT campaign*

This will be based on the idea that your Kill Teams have been despatched to a mysterious planet (where, of course, things are not as they seem).  Some are there to push back the borders of known space, some to search for precious salvage...and some have the darkest motives of all.

I'm hoping we'll have at least 4 players *and* me available, the plan will be to have 3 rounds so all the players get a feel for their opponents...then the fun starts with some co-operative multi-player.  Of course, it's as co-operative as you want it to be - there can only be one winner.

Please post your Name and Army, then PM me with your list and any particular fluff you want including...I'll get writing over the weekend.

* I know some people (Matt B for example) can't make Saturday - still join the campaign, you'll just be late to the party and so will be woven into the narrative at a later point.  Your guys will be greener...but fresher - hey, they didn't bring *that* much ammo with them you know.

I'm playing in the NetRunner tourney on Saturday I'm afraid. Though I'll be in with a little Inquisitorial Team for any future games.

I don't suppose anyone would mind me using a couple of these bigger guys as counts-as Servitors? http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/Myrmadon-destructors4.jpg (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/Myrmadon-destructors4.jpg)

Yep, due to warp storms our arrival on the planet will be delayed!  Not to worry, more time for my new Astra Militarum to arrive.

Who are nothing like the Imperial Guard.

Nope.

Sorry, eye off ball by Tom.

Right, looks like there're 5 or 6 interested parties, which is awesome.  If people can PM me their lists I'll start putting together the fluff side of things - basic outline of the campaign will be:

Round 1 - Planetfall 1v1 match ups - Initial skirmishes between your novice Kill Teams as boots hit dirt - this gives everyone a chance to try out their list and have a play with the KT dynamic if you're not familiar with the variant.  As a heads up, it's a pretty dark place you've landed on.

Round 2 - A Stranger's Just a Friend You Haven't Met - 2v1 match ups where possible (I'll make myself available as stand in), aiming to play 3 games per session to have each possible alliance.  There can be only one winner though, so the 2 can't relax entirely...their new friend's all too eager to stab them in the back.

Tournament 1 - Singles Tournament to gain control of a key communications relay.  Ridiculously dense Necromunda style terrain...and one of your Specialists is looking a bit funny.

And then the sun comes up...and it all goes wrong as we explore some of the extra missions with 2 more rounds of variations and another Tournament where it's not what you know, it's who you know that'll decide victory.

So are we using the free or current rules for our team? As Mike and I found out last Saturday, they both have different rules when it comes to specialisms/leader-traits.

Having played both I think I prefer the updated rules, tidies up the specialist skills and forces a bit more thought into the army list.

If anyone's lacking access to these....pester Seb.  Oh right, fine, pester me and we'll discuss via PM!

Ok, whilst people are still pondering lists it's probably worth pointing out that there's a slight bias towards Space Marines in the players signed up so far.  I'm pointing this out not to ask anyone to shift armies, but just so people can know the armies they'll be facing.

Round One will begin on the 12th of May...fluff/mission/how to pick an opponent will be up before the end of this week - there's still time to get involved and people don't have to play every week, please drop me a PM if you're interested in playing so I can write you into the storyline - and if you want to name your specialists/leader/squad mascot let me know!

Army lists WITH SPECIALISTS (including skill choices) to me by Sunday 11th please.  Lists cannot be changed during the Rounds.

Don't forget, this is for fun, for the joy of fluffy gaming and, above all, for cake.

Armies so far:

Me - Traitor Guard
Seb - Ravenwing
Matt B - Deathwatch
Matt C - Ultramarines
Mike - Imperial Fists
Bart - 'Strange' Eldar
Pete - Inquisition

And apologies  I'm using your forum name rather than actual name because I have the memory of a goldfish:
Esmerelda's Sticky Soup - Eldar (or maybe Dark Eldar)

(That would be Ed  :cool3:)

That could be good actually Mike, although at least everyone's using a different Chapter so hopefully different play styles (Seb's army is jump pack based, Matt B's using Sternguard, etc); don't feel you have to change!

KILL TEAM CAMPAIGN ROUND ONE - Seven Days of Darkness

Fires bloomed in the night sky, fading away even as they burned.  The explosions were the only source of light in the sky, a once in a millennia alignment of planetary bodies in the Damos system plunged this world, Damos IV, into perpetual darkness for seven whole days and nights.  This was the second night of the eclipse, the dark of the first had been marred by red flame and the glow of energy weapons as bloody rebellion broke out across the planet, the rule of the Imperium overthrown by fanatics dedicated to one they called The Old Crow.  The last broadcast from the planet had been a declaration; the planet was no longer part of the Imperium, its inhabitants rejecting the light of the God-Emperor.  Damos IV belonged to the Crow.  It belonged to the darkness.

The rebellion was led by the man born as Quintus Vraal, a nameless recruit who grew into a war hero anointed in blood on a dozen worlds before returning home as Commander of Damos IV's Planetary Defence Force, where he began to dream of darkness and black feathers.  His dreams continued even when he woke, and so he knew them to be visions.  He recounted these visions to his closest aides, who tried to arrest him, so he cut them down.  He then preached his words to his junior officers, who, on seeing the blood soaking his uniform, tried to kill him.  The Crow had other plans for Vraal, however, and it was the officers who died.  In the military jails Vraal finally found his audience and the Crow found its converts.  The planet was taken by force as the eclipse began, the sun blocked out by the black wings of the Crow, shielding the flock as they did its will.

In an unlit control room, Vraal sighed as he looked at the output on a bank of monitors; each overhead burst marked another orbital sensor being destroyed, jarring screens one at a time into a jumbled chiaroscuro of static.  The systematic blinding of the planet's defences showed more clearly than any camera view that the Emperor's lap dogs had arrived.  Several Gladius class Imperial frigates had been identified as they arrived, it seemed the Inquisition and several marine chapters had sent forces to conquer the planet.  However, the eclipse was not a mere absence of light, no telemetry would be able to scan the surface during the alignment either and orbit to surface communications would be limited at best.  The invaders would have to despatch scouting parties, single squads of hardened specialists tasked to identify and secure landing zones before their forces could safely land.

The darkness did not hamper Vraal, the Crow had gifted him with senses other than he had possessed before his awakening.  These senses warned of another presence close at hand, an old, alien spirit he could not identify.  He felt no fear at this unknown intrusion although it felt entirely hostile.  Whether under attack from unknown aliens or the forces of the Imperium, Vraal had only one task.  To hold the planet of Damos IV until the end of the alignment, when the Crow would rise from the darkness.

Vraal smiled to himself as the fires in the sky died out.  Whoever came to the surface of Damos IV would be reminded why primitive man worshiped fire.  Because without fire, there was only the dark.  And here on Damos IV, the dark waited.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Games for Round One are 1v1 and will use Mission 2 - Alone In The Dark from the Kill Team Pack

The round lasts from Monday 12th to Thursday 22nd of May

Right, lets get this started shall we?  Your brave Kill Teams have been dispatched to Damos IV, where things have taken a turn for the worse recently.  Whilst the main forces orbit the planet (or arrive via Webway, pointy ear fans) your squads are tasked with finding and securing landing zones.  Of course, they don't know who else is around and will be feeling quite twitchy in the darkness...

There are no set match ups for this round, please play as many different opponents as you can - this is to give anyone who's not played much Kill Team a chance to get up to speed and for you to get a feel for your force against various lists before the narrative elements kick in next round and then more prescriptive games for Round 3 onwards.  Please post game reports on this thread - at the conclusion of the round I'll summarise the different fights and the most blood soaked leaders and specialists will get a bonus or two - note this will take into account the number of games played as well so won't disadvantage someone who's only played once vs someone who's had 10 games!  Too much blood of course and the Crow may take note...

The Crow God's own scout patrols are available for games in Week 2 of this Round as well, I'll have a couple of different lists for people to play against - Imperial Guard/Chaos Cultists.

So, get those games booked and of course any comments/feedback welcome.

"Dragon One this it Lima Charlie. The egg is has been laid. Over."
"Lima Charlie, Dragon One. Message understood. Proceed to rendezvous point Angel Six. Acknowledge. Over."
" Dragon One, I confirm Angel Six. Out"

And so it began. A squad of tactical marines from 3rd Company of the Ordo Biblica Sacra quickly moved to secure the landing site. Their Brother-Sergeant, only recent promoted and seconded from the first company, had much to prove; both to himself and his superiors. The third cmpany captain, Captain de la Pole was gathering his scattered troops and would make planetfall as soon as possible. Until then the landing party was alone. Or were they?

With an average of 5 people attending every club night , and 3-4 of those don't play 40k, there lies the problem..
Mike wanted a first slot game of 40k kT this week and had no replies....

Coolio

It wasn't much for the Psychic phase, which is pretty irrelelvant for our campaign, but more to do with the minor changes to things like cover, charging through Difficult Terrain etc. Happy to stick with 6th rules though.

Looking forward to giving 7th a run out soon though.

Well, we actually managed to play a game on Thursday! It was a 4 way Alone in the Dark game featuring the Inquisition, Deathwatch, Eldar and Ultramarines.

Final scores (from what I can remember):

Inquisition - 4
Deathwatch - 3
Eldar - 2
Ultramarines - 1

It should probably be pointed out that, had the game continued one more turn then Matt's Deathwatch would've taken the 2 points that he needed - he finished the turn with 2 guys 3 inches from scoring linebreaker and was one movement phase away from claiming an objective with another couple of marines.

As a summery of my corner of the table: I started the game with everyone apart from my 'Inquisitor' and a Servitor on the table and decided to head for Matt's Deathwatch, leaving a few guys to cover my rear. Long story short: my idea of flushing Matt's Marines out towards the Other Matt's Ultras kinda ended up going a bit badly in that the Deathwatch, for once, decided to live up to fluff.

A couple of their outflankers got around my tank and simply shrugged off the attentions of 3 Stormtroopers, a Daemonhost and the Chimera (a servitor also turned up to help... but got confused and shut down, only to get blasted off a turn later), slaughtering them along with their ride. Luckily my rear was defended by a combination of my brave Weapons Specialist and Slaneesh nabbing a couple of Seb's Warp-Spiders for me (again, there was another Servitor in attendance, but having shot off a marine turn one it decided that it's job was done and stayed mind-locked until Seb shot him in the back).

Eventually my Inquisitor turned up to see that, yes, almost everyone had indeed died before taking a bolt-round to the face.

I drew with Matt for 2nd on 3VPs: warlord kill, 1 objective and Linebreaker in the other Matt's deployment zone  :wink;m::

Playing balsy was my undoing, losing 3 Warp Spiders on their Warp Jump moves... for much hilarity I might add

Well, sounds like Round 1's winner was...Pete!  Congratulations your Inquisitor has scoped out a fine landing site for subsequent reinforcement.  Comm links have been set up and, with updated intelligence now available from your orbiting spacecraft, you've got the tactical advantage.  Your leader can add or subtract 1 from his Warlord Trait roll during the next round's games.

ROUND 2 kicks off tomorrow but I'll actually be down at the club (with a Kill Team if anyone fancies a game after the Fantasy stuff's done) I'll hold off on posting the scenario til mid week with a kick off date of Thursday.

Awesomely fun game on Thursday. Had a lot of fun fighting Pete - we had our own little Inquisition on Inquisition action going on down one side of the board that had tank shocking and everything

ROUND 2 - Contact Contact!

Vraal sighed in exasperation.   None of his hand picked scouting parties had encountered the invaders, who had instead fallen on each other like wild dogs moments after landing.  Still, let the fools bleed each other dry, so far none had found their way to anything of note.

At the point his enhanced senses sounded a clarion call, the enemies were bearing down on one of the more remote outposts his troops controlled, it seemed his defenders would taste alien blood after all...

Mission 4 - Infiltrate The Camp (PM me if you need the details!)

Numbers allowing, this should be a 3 player round.  2 attackers, 1 defender - It's up to the attacking players to decide if they want to buddy up of course, but there can only be one winner.

NB, Pete was the winner of the last round and has earned his leader the ability to +1 or -1 from his Warlord Trait roll.

Also, apologies for the lack of presence from myself in Round 1...it turns out that organising a wedding (mine) actually takes quite a lot of time and effort.  My stag do involved 2 hospitalisations (neither of which were me or drink related, damn you activites!) and I've spent a rather hectic few days buying rings (way more choice than you think.  Apparently I'm a fan of traditional medium weight 5mm bands in palladium.) and hiring kilts (yes, I'm Scots on my mother's side).  There's no way I'll be down this Thursday (BOO!) but I *will* be down the week after when hopefully lots of people can run at my Guard who are painted now and everything!
