Myself and Ritchie had a go at Descent this wknd , with an intro game hosted by Bart.
He played the evil Overlord intent on killing me and Ritchie (and very protective he was of his wee beastmen)...

The game is essentially Heroquest with a lot more depth..

I was an Orc Shaman and Ritchie was a Human Huntsman complete with red panda side kick..

Our mission was to kill a Giant lurking somewhere in the dungeon ahead..

And boy was it tough, newly spawning monsters, traps, fake treasure tests, and only two of us against it..
We did 'die' several times but so long as you have enough conquest tokens, you get healed in the town..
We got several nice weapons and upgrades along the way but were out of 'lives' by the time we met the Giant and his 2 Manticore sidekicks.
Bart has stored up some nasty cards for him to use and a combo of Manticore posion shots and a double attack / charge from the club wielding Giant finished us off... -p

However it had been a great day and a very close result, our characters could have won if luck had gone our way...

Thanks to Bart for being top host and I look foward to starting a Descent campaign at the OG nights...

Descent Pro's and Con's...

Pro's..

Great attention to detail, good minis, good counters, artwork etc

Good Combat system, simple yet covers loads of variables..

Hard, this game is tough, and gets tougher the more players you have by virtue of the monsters stats increase...
But this toughness presents a good challenge and prevents the monster blindness, players would often get in Heroquest when nothing provided a challenge any more...

Expansions, 3 so far, with a campaign system in place now..

The Overlord. Instead of simply being a semi-neutral DM/GM, the Overlord player is part of the game, in order to win, he must kill the players..

Con's

Counters - Good quality but soooooooooo many of them...

LOS - Really really terrible LOS rules, slows the game down, needs clarifying big time...(I have not checked out the FAQ's yet)

Overall a great game, the best in the Genre so far and one I would recommend to anyone to have a go...

Here speaketh the evil.

My take on things.

LOS is ok really, but takes time to get used to.

When you get more players in the game gets tougher, but for the Overlord. The improved monster stats nowhere near make up for the incresed firepower of the heroes. Especially when the mages get runes with Blast ability. Does to tightly packed monsters what a well cast Gateway does to my white lions regularly.

From my perspective, the biggest flaw is that pretty much all monsters, even the named ones at the end of missions, are one shots really. When heroes get hold of some gold items, game over. Speaking from bitter experience.

Otherwise the game is really cool and with the expansions, the combos seem infinite.

Thats probably the best place to do it.

Session 2 call:
Ol, Ritchie, John. Once everybody is around and recovered, the time is coming. Which weekend(s) can people make it in August? The evil is flexible, apart from 1/2 Aug, when I'm away.

And we have a space free potentially, so anybody else interested?
Next couple of sessions will be at mine, the games take too long to do it on Mon evenings, until we start the campaign.
