Title: Tale of 6 Gamers - 40K
Post by: fatolaf on November 04, 2011, 02:39:35 pm
The council are proud to present, the Tale of 6 Gamers 40K..

Each month, the 6 of us wil paint 250 points of our chosen 40K army, after the first 2 months we will then be playing games with our forces as they grow.
The first being doubles due to the armies only being 500pts each at that stage..

The forces will be in line with the Planet OG comp and the lists might change as the comp grows and changes..

The entrants and their chosen armies are..

Ol: Grey Knights
Stevo: Necrons
Gareth: Space Marines
Mark: Dark Eldar
Lee: Tyranids
JD: Necrons

We will put up piccies, reports, thoughts on the army etc , painting will start mid November...

I feel that the Necrons and Grey Knights have a substantial advantage in this...

Good Luck guys! I look forward to seeing all the drybrushed silver   :))

easier than that.  Spray silver from a can, allow to dry badab black wash.  The only limiting factor is how quickly you can build them!

I can promise you know that my Knights will be very different from the norm...

@ Tom - Feel free to do your own PLOG for your guard buddy. But part of the point of this LOG is that we are all pretty much new players to 40K, so we will be learning the game as we paint the armies.

Steve H - Necrons - Pre Month 1 post

Pretty excited about this Tale of 6 OG HQ members for the following reasons:

1/. I think 40k really lends itself to the format... barring a few hordey armies the numbers of models per month is a lot more manageable than in fantasy. None of those months where you have to paint 100 Skaven slaves or such like! Reason Number 1 for choosing Necrons: High points cost = no mass painting!

2./ I actually really like 40k but have been in self-imposed absence for too-long... i find it doesnt need to be taken too seriously, and the missions in it really work, unlike in other games. Unfortunately im not very good at it so i need something thats pretty tough to kill, as my stuff will be dying a lot. Reason Number 2 for choosing Necrons: High toughness and gets back up when its dead = an alleviating factor for some of my crapness!

3./ I really like the 40k fluff and the bits of the new codex i've read so far are exceptional

4./ Reason number 3 for choosing Necrons: The models are really, really ace!

One thing is should clarify at this point... im pretty average at 40k and there is no motivation at all in this to come up with the best Necron army that money can buy. In fact, i'd have no idea what that would even look like. This is pretty much going to be the models that i like - with a little bit of common sense thrown in!

So, with shiny new model syndrome in my eyes i went into an actual GW (for the first time in years... had loads of crap to exchange). It was actually quite exciting, although more expensive than Olly hand delivering it into my hands at the club :(. So I picked up for my first batch of models for the tale:

- Necron Overlord (one of my favourite models in years)
- Necron Cryptek (because they seem cool as hell!)
- 1 Box of Necron Warriors (Common sense... boooooo!)
- 1 Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark Kit (so, so pretty!)

Meaning my first 250 points for month one looks something like:

HQ - Necron Overlord; Phase Shifter and Warscythe = 145
Troops - 8 Necron Warriors = 104

Exciting huh!!!? No??? Oh well... month 2 should have some toys in i hope!!!

Gareth – Ultramarine 4th Company - Pre Month 1 post

Just to reiterate Steve's comments I'm also excited about this Tale of 6 OG HQ members for the following reasons:

1./ Having played predominantly 40K prior to joining the club where I've been side tracked by the intricacies of WFB I'm really looking forward to breaking out my Space Smurf's again after two years in mothballs.

2./ As I'll be running a bike/scout themed list this will be a complete change to how I use to run my 4th edition lists which generally were mech heavy leading to a completely different play style for me to try out.

3./  As per point two with the type of army I'll be putting together 250pts a month equally a squad of bikes... Compared to the hordes of Empire state troops and the Gors I've been churning out this will almost feel like a break!

4./ Ultramarines were my first army way back when and I've always wanted to get a completed chapter built. With the 1st and the 2nd companies done this Blog gives me the opportunity to add one more company to the roster!

5./ What's cooler than an 8ft tall superhuman encased in the best armour and the best weaponry available in the Imperium .... One tearing around on a supercharged bike... that's what!!   :cool3:

6./ I'd actually planned to start this exact army a couple of years ago just before my gaming group all stop playing so I have the vast majority of model already available...
In addition given the small size of this force it gives me a great opportunity to convert most of the models...

So Month one for me is going to be the following :-

-   Space Marine Captain on Bike (to unlock Bikes as troops)
- 8 Bikers
-   Space Marine Attack Bike

Ok so those of you that have seen the Codex are probably going huh... 8 bikes with an attack bike is easily 250pts.....   And you'd be right.... But I figured assembling and painting 10 models in a month rather than nine is doable not to mention a vital part of the list....

So stay tuned for updates and more bikes that a hells angels convention.........

Lee – Hive Fleet Ga'Laan

I'm looking to use this Tale of 6 to finally get my space bugs all painted up! I'm going to be continuing my self-enforced theme of no guns, just combat stompy things (and a few psychic powers, shh!).  The army will end up as a hungry and angry mess no doubt, much like me after a night out!

The 250 points each month is a good target for me, as I'll be using my planned yellow and black colour scheme which is quite quick and simple. Based on Kiwi james's suggestion, I was tempted to call them Hive Fleet Pittsburgh, but I didn't feel right using a sports reference! E-cookie for guessing the reference for the hive fleet name I've used instead.

Also, as I'm going down the stompy all combat style, the list will have a lot of big buggers in, so they should help to fill the points quite quickly, with hormagants/stealers to round out the points each month.

My first month's painting is going to be the BMF himself, the Trygon Prime for 240 points (rounded out with two hormagaunts for 12 points).

Ol - (Acid) Grey Knights Pre-Month 1

Having also just started playing 40K again after a 20+ year break, I am getting back into it big time.
Having read all the codexs and the rules (several times), I found myself loving the Grey Knights.

1) Low model count, probably the most expensive in an army book

2) Awesome models, always wanted some sort of marine army and these new models blew me away

3) They are quite good, which after having started playing with Tau, comes as a nice change. I still need to learn what i am doing though, but I have managed a few practise wins (at a small points level) against Gareth & Mark, only because of missions though..

4) Psychic Powers - They have loads, must learn to remember them all, makes it a very multi phase army as they are good at shooting, good at moving and awesome (lethal) in CC...

So far I have built the basics, 5 termies, 5 troops, 5 heavy Weapon, 5 fast attack (teleporting FTW) and a Razorback.

So these will be the models I paint up first. I have based them on nice resin bases. that give a dried up river, cursed earth type look. And the paint scheme will refelct the army being stationed on a wasteland planet full of acid rain and hardship. So very battered marines is the idea...

My first 250 points will be my HQ and 5 marine troops, they will prob be over 250 as they are so expensive, but nothing I can really do about that.... :cool3:

Will start on these boys after the WFB tournie I am going to this wknd...

WIP piccies coming as well

Mark - Dark eldar

Like everybody else well up for this.

Being mainly a fantasy player this wil give me a chance to focus on something else, paint some exceptionally cool models and start something on an equal level with everyone else involved.

My 1st 250 points wil be

Haemoculus and 10 wracks

-sigh- Would love to get in on this each time I see an update. Sadly, I couldn't paint my own Dark Eldar quick enough to take part anyway.

Keen to see how the DE evolve and fare against the rest -insert evil glare here-

JD's pre , pre month one .

Not too much for me to say just yet as I haven't got the Necron book yet and I know nothing of 40k rules yet either . But as soon as I get the book etc I'll get something more interesting put down  .

Anyway , as I'm rubbish at one gaming system I decided I may as well be rubbish at two ! When I started actively again with the hobby earlier this year and people asked if I was at all interested in 40k I said back then that I would take a look when the new Necron book came out and here it is so what better way for me to get started than joining the Tale of 6 Gamers . Getting an army together in bite size chunks rather than one big paniced rush and the motivation to make it presentable with the monthgly timetable for painting it .

When I have a vague idea of what I'm doing I'll add my first months models .

Note to all 6 Gamers
Make sure for your 500pt force that it has as a minimum 1HQ choice and 1 troops choice...

Since we are going to be playing lots of games as part of this Tale...

Oki doki ,

Had a looksie at the Necron army lists and my first 250 points shall be -

Necron Overlord with Phase Shifter and Ressurection Orb 165pts .
5 Necron Immortals with Tesla Carbines 85pts .

Even at my speed of painting six models should be achievable !

Hehe even with my limited 40k knowledge I dont think str 5 , assault 1 with no AP should worry you too much ? But as Tom says with the tesla rule of 2 additional hits on a roll of 6 I'm hoping they do have their place .

Early consensus appears to be that there is a lot of fail in the necro codex - hopefully people figure out some awesomeness (always a chance written with 6th in mind as well) because the models are awesome

Mass scarabs ftw! I've actually seen a lot of people saying its a very good codex with lots of list options , but it does scream 6th ed a bit...

It does seem veyr different to the last few codecs, and too be honest with models that good, I dont think it will hurt the sales, if they are not as bent as the last books..

And yes it does seem to be infused with a possible 6th ed flavour....

Right all... The Tale of 6 gamers officially starts next Monday (21/11/2011) so the first deadline of 250 points, fully painted and based, is Monday 19th December.

No being late! And remember, by the end of month 2 you need:

- 500 points of painted stuff (no more, no less!), including....

- 1 Hq and a minimum of 1 troops

Hope thats all ok? Let me know if not...

Stevo

Don't know what you mean mark, it's still rolling along.

We're gonna call the end of December the end of month 1, then the future months are easier to judge how many days through we are.

Looking very nice Steve-o, and a nice take on bunch of usually grey nut-jobs. Crisply done too, so top marks

Yup agreed. Glad you reprinted the wolf head red. Looks much more striking now imo. Have fun painting all the white btw, it will drive you insane by the end :))

And having played against Steve yesterday, I can see why Wolves are so feared.
As well as his Dice being OTT, in 2 turns, his unit of Longfangs killed our Landraider, Stormraven, Rhino and 2 terminators.....Crazy...

well for this month of december just got a few more grey hunter 10man squad (need to strip some though) and a razorback which totals 250 points.

january will include 5 man blood claws and 5 man wolf guard terminators, rune priest, wolf lord and loanwolf a bit over 250 points  :wink;m::

Feb - longfangs x6 and prob another razorback and another 5man squad of blood claws.

And during the whole lot make a start on the thunderwolf cav, finding sutible modles etc or wait for GW to make some but i dout it as SW are not that popular i dont think.

Pic to come when i get back home later on this evining/tomorrow morning

Right here's my offering for month one.. The first squad of bikes. I went with a slightly darken colour scheme then i had with previous UM models to reflect the grubby nature of the bikes as they move through the battlefield and i'm pretty happy with the results.

Month two will be my Captain on Bike to make the Bike squad a troop choice and a landspeeder or two....

I started the month 2 painting with a Tyranid Prime conversion (that I can also use as a Tyrant)

Nice to see the Space Hulk Nids done Lee, looking good mate.

Top marks Steve on the consistent white, but I can already see the twitch in your eye after tonight, knowing you have to do even more...! :wink;m::
