Title: Deck Size?
Post by: maelzch on January 07, 2010, 12:38:08 pm
Just a quick question about the size of the decks people are playing with (shh Mike!! :bash;m:)

How many cards is everyone putting into a 'custom' deck?

I ask now with the thinking that we should all play the same size at OG, out of ease.

I am currently running 60, of which 10 are neutral but I would be fine with playing against a 50 or a 70, there are pro's and cons to having smaller or larger decks..

I would draw the line against any deck bigger than 70 however...

shall we agree on a club max deck size of 70 then?

My experience of CCG/TCGs (or whatever the cool kids are calling them nowadays) is that the closest you run your deck to the minimum number of cards, the less thinned out it becomes. I guess with invasion your card draw is somewhat defined by your general match strategies (i.e. if you play a lot of quest cards then your card draw will be insane). I don't really see the point in setting a maximum number of cards. There's no real benefit that I can see (other than uber-card-draw decks that don't want to kill themselves), as any person that runs a stupid number of cards is really limiting their chances of drawing their strongest cards - particularly during the first few turns of the game.

I don't know how well balanced the cards are in general, but I'd guess that most people have 3-4 cards in their deck that they really want to get out as often as possible. With this in mind running 70 cards when you could run 40 (or whatever the minimum is) is just making it harder for you to get the cards out that you really need.

hmmm- interesting thoughts.

:cool3:

what do people reckong to running whatever deck size you like?!  does the rulebook say anything on it.

the rulebook does say 50-100 as a deck size, so we could potentially resort to that

We can yes but for some reason (just ask Ritchie) I have always preferred (back in my magic days) to have everyone on the same number of cards...
Just my personal taste...

Ahhh, the Monica of CCGs. Despite the considerably lager decks I ran with I hardly ever won, I would perhaps have learnt to edit and construct better but it was far more fun to turn up with a mountain of cards and wind you up......

Never had any complaints about the sizing of my deck.

my guess is its designed for both players to have the same number of cards...

If you have more cards than your opponent then you have a massive advantage in the 'if you run out of cards you lose' stakes.

yep that has always been a problem, especially when faced with decking decks etc...

though I've yet to play a game that gets anywhere near that stage!

Aye. I guess as the game progresses we might see more degenerate decks emerge (balance is a fickle mistress afterall), meaning having a large card size is helpful. Until that point I stick with my original sentiment that adding more cards makes your deck weaker unless you have a good way of getting to the cards you need consistently.

chaos does already have a load of cards the only purpose of which is to get the opponent to discard from his hand (journey to the gate quest springs to mind).  I would have thought a couple of them on the go would burn through a deck quite quick, thus deck size becomes important.

im happy to stick with 70 then- beauty of it is we can always review as new cards come out anyway.

I don't doubt that in the future there will be decks based around card denial and decking, but until the game evolves sufficiently it doesn't look like a particularly scary prospect just yet.

from a magic experience, it is normally 60 cards with the exceptions of pre-release events which is 40 cards.
Can't remember if you can have a maximum of 3 or 4 of the same card in the deck, if it is 3 I would recommend 50 cards, 4 then 60 cards.

It's 3 in Invasion mate, and 50 I dont think works as in magic, we need more cards IMO

Purely in case you run out? I can't think of another reason why, and from what I've heard no one's had it happen (yet!).

i dont feel i can get enough variety into my deck at only 50 card, I'd have to make choices then!

not really lee... you just have to not have 3 of each of the best cards....

Empire vs Empire / Dwarves on Monday, I won on the last turn, with  no cards left to draw on the next as I was drawing 10 a turn....
50-70 limit sounds fine to me (or at least for tournie play), dont really care for club play..
