Righty, so after much (some) persuasion, I'm firing up a Dawi Zharr plog! (that's chaos dwarfs for those of you who dont know)
I'm gonna start with a stage-by-stage of how I'm converting my immortals:
Take 1 skull pass dwarf,
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting1.jpg)
Remove arms, shield, beard, and other bits
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting2.jpg)
Then add the armour plating
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting4.jpg)
Add the beard (made of GS twists) and a small armour plate by the face
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting6.jpg)
then add a mask made from a marauder shoulder pad
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting7.jpg)
finally add marauder arms and a shield
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/converting8.jpg)
Tadaa! One finished chaos dwarf!
Here's what i have to do for the charge:
Hero
15 warriors
10 blunderbusses
'gyrocopter'
cannon
+crew
bolt thrower
+crew
[EDIT] All done now!

Looking good, really like your lava, really brightens up the paintscheme! Also you look to have some real 'depth' in your browns. Keep it up, Mike's beating you! :bash;m:

better than mine
Been a while Lee, bout time for an update?
righty, to keep Ritchie quiet, here's a few more Dawi Zharr. This is the first 6 for the unit of 15 warriors (and all their bases). I've updated my progress in the earlier post.

yeh, i thought you'd find it familiar!
the grey needs a lot more work really, but im trying to get everything to TT standard for the Charge
I've been busy this weekend, done the rest of the warriors:
The banner will be done at a later date, Im currently trying to get stuff done for the charge.
I've also got a Hero done:
I'm currently gettin pissed off as i seem unable to re-sculpt what i did for my first 5 thunderers!
Almost looks like I'll make it for the charge tho, if i can get these frikking thunderers done!!
I am loving the verdigris look, you really won't need that many troops for the charge, surely it is better to take 50 points of fantastically painted models that 750 points of cack?
Looking good sir, and remember there is a prize (courtesy of OG Games) for best army.... :smokinglb:

I've now got all the assembly done and I'll be hitting the painting hard this weekend! Behind the thunderers, you can see the bolt thrower crew, the BT will remain hidden until it's unveiled once painted!
I have a feeling that this plog may become much larger than just the 750 points!
Those faces just look great, so characterful
I may stand a chance of winning the painting/assembly race...
But i've damn sure lost the 'sexy factor' battle. I want to cry when I see models like that... and im not sure if they're tears of joy for the gorgeousness or tears of sadness cause i see greenstuff as the enemy.
not that I cry....

GS is your friend, embrace it and one step nearer to conversion enlightenment (insanity?) you will be!
I am intrigued to see what you have come up with for the bolt thrower... :doomdiver001:
I've finished my thunderbusses (thunderers for 'counts as', blunderbusses for CDs)
and the back rank, showing my magnetised movement trays, lines of 5 for these guys
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/backrank.jpg)
Now to just do the bolt thrower, then I'm done for the Charge!!
Really looking sweet mate, can't wait to see them in the flesh, the lava really brightens up the model and catches the eye, great.
I like the detail on the plaited beards too.
Are you not sick of painting red yet?
for some reason, i do seem to put red on a lot of stuff!
Red.... chaos dwarves... you crazy fool!.
Must say that the plogs really helped me get the skaven ready in time.
So much so that having finished with a few weeks to spare i've started on the other 1250pts for the GT.... Crazy fool!.
of course knowing this lee now has to sculpt and paint another 1250pts of chaos dwarves.... MWAHAHAHA

The circle top layer of the base part is from the giant set, the lower base is a 2p coin with cocktail sticks on. The feet are from the marauder standard top. Is was a moment of madness when that was made! :nutzo:

I thought that too or maybe a giant grudge thrower, using his cannon arm as a rock launcher.
Lee I need to rack your brains (im sure Richie or erik can fith that up) on GS this thursday.... I need to do something similar to your giants leg (again with the filthability) with a ratty conversion....
But im cack at GS!
Mike, If you want to see a giants leg, I'm sure I can help you out.........
 Absolutely fantastic! Like Richie said good green stuffing on the mecha-leg (and everywhere else). With the big beardy, hairy head would it be worth green stuffing more body hair on him, perhaps extending the matted hair on the back of the neck further down the spine as far as the shoulder blades?
Giants aren't too unfriendly, they're a huge points sink and as a T5 large target they get shot up a treat.

My custom corroded bronze technique:
basecoat Dark Angels Green
heavy drybrush snot green
edge highlight goblin green,
heavy drybrush/paint a dark bronze
highlight with light bronze
wash with Thraka Green,
possibly final edge highlights with v light bronze
Looks really good mate!
How do you get good photos without it looking all blurred, I can only take photos of my models if they're are about 3ft away, which makes the detail a tad tricky to see!!

I often put paper behing the model. Make sure you use a macro funtion on the camera, and also some patience in the case of my camera, as it's a bit poo!

00O I took a sneaky peek at one of your dwarfs last night and this technique looks really good in the flesh. And now I know why. Sadly depth and lustre can only really be achieved with a 7 layer technique... I'm more of a dry brush and ink kinda painter but I will be giving this a go at some point coz it looks the nuts.

but on topic, you could probably drop at least two steps and still keep the same sort of effect. Could probably lose one of the green stages and the light bronze stage.
I was thoroughly disappointed there Lee, I thought there was going to be some picture updates! Bad Lee! :spank:
sorry mate!
Yeah, slacker!
i'm currently assembling (and converting) loads of reinforcements for this army to use for the Charge 2, so there'll probs be WIPs up at some point over the weekend.
only a half update today, here's a shot of everything i'm trying to get painted for the Clapham Charge 2:
Lots to do mate, good luck to you....
bit of a pnic to get it done methinks! I'll try to keep this updated as i go
I tried painting the bronze effect over the weekend but it came up too shiny. I didn't undercoat in black which probably doesn't help but never the less it wasn't what I was looking for. Is there any chance you could bring the Colossus with you on Thursday so I can have a good look? Plus I haven't seen the model in the flesh yet and I'd like to.
I'll try fitting it into my case for thursday, tho it is a little awkwardly sized!
My guess why it came up too bright would be that you use a white undercoat, i use black undercoat
When I undercoat with white, for example with my blood bowl team, I always hand undercoat the metal in black. Its a real pain with all the studded spikes on a human blood bowl team, but I think its worth it for the final look.
that does sound a bit of a pain! I always just undercoat everything with black, so I don't really have that issue
I normally do too, but I was painting white armour for my blood bowl team, and when painting white, you really need a white undercoat otherwise its very difficult to get a bright clean look.
even for white i usually go up from black, but then i like most of my stuff to look dirty and grimy
For white, I undercoat black, paint light grey then highlight with white. Gives it definition and looks white enough.
That's what I'll be doing for my Wissenlanders too, its just with my blood bowl team, I wanted a very clean, perfect white.

:)) New kit every game mate! Wissenchester are owned by an extremely rich Prince from Araby! ;)
Plus when we play your Chaos Dwarves, you can never tackle us anyway! ;)
Oooh, Challenge! Pronounced Chall - enge as opposed to Chal - lenge of course!
Looking forward to getting back on the blood bowl pitch.
Thanks for the tips on photographing Lee, will have a go!
Quotewhen painting white, you really need a white undercoat otherwise its very difficult to get a bright clean look.
I managed to get a nice bright white on my High Elves, by undercoating in black and then using Astronomacian Grey (mixed with Skull White) as a basecoat - found using a Foundation Grey really helps get bright whites.
I think that's a good idea, I'll try that with my Wissenland troops.
Here's soem progress on what I'm doing for the Charge 2, I've got all of the bases done!

Your lava bases really are excellent Lee. Do you use a gloss varnish to finish them off, or is that something you may consider?
Can't wait to see them fully painted.
i may at some point varnish them, but i don't do it atm
Here's a quick update of what I finished last night, 10 hobgoblins with 'shortbows'. I need to go back and touch up the painting, but atm I'm really just speed painting for the Clapham Charge!

The whole unit of thunderbusses with the new additions
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/fullunit-1.jpg)
also done 10 sneaky gits, which will double up as slayers when I play this force as 'counts as' dwarfs.
the champion
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/champion.jpg)
and two with great weapons
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/GWgits.jpg)
Love the sneaky gits, is that a combo of gobbos, marauders and flagellants?
heads from gnoblars, gobbos and 40k grots
bodies and arms from flagellants
weapons are old night gobbo daggers, old chaos warrior daggers and a few other bits and bobs
love those gits....
nice!!
Heres some wound markers I've done for this army. The square holes in each one are big enough for a dice, this way I don't need to make ones for different numbers.

Another model painted, this can be either an eruption gun (from Indy GT book) or a unit filler for blunderbusses

and another post!
Here's the command for my entry for the tale of OG Gamers painting challenge

Update time!
This will be a Daemonsmith on (in?) Daemoneater. I didn't do too much conversion on it, as it's a tricky bugger of a model!

Cheers,
Maelzch
Awesome stuff, loved looking through this. Got a soft spot for the Chaos Dwarfs and yours are fantastic!
Another good job Lee
There's that lovely aged bronze colour I can't seem to replicate. One day you're going to have to sit down and show me how you do that while I take notes. Still lucky me I get to face this army on Thursday!
Don't know what the gold colour he's used is but I'd guess it's a wash of the GW jade colour over the top to give it that tarnished look.
the corroded bronze is dead simple:
basecoat Dark Angels Green
drybrush Snot Green
heavy drybrush Dwarf Bronze
wash with Thraka Green (GW Wash)
Simples!
a quick update, just finished the first model for my multi-use slave unit (either skavenslaves or as rabble in an indy GT list)
It's converted from an old slayer mini

and a shot for Ritchie:

Here's some WIPs of the war machine that will counts as my death rocket:

Looks really cool. Where's the skull chain on the front from?
not too sure really, its just something from my extensive bits box!

The face on the back is from the Arcane Ruins set
Quote40K chaos tank sprue for the Rhino for sure.
Damn it nothing I'm likely to have then!!
Looks really good though, looking frowarad to it "gribbling" all over the table towards me!
Here's my latest Dawi Zharr unit, 15 Warriors with GW, Heavy armour, shields and full command
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/completeunit2.jpg)
I intend to go back and detail up the faces later on, I'm just trying to get a load of stuff done to tabletop standard for May.
There is something about the musician face that just carries so much character.
Here's what I've finished this weekend:
firstly here's my death rocket:
and I've also done the second bolt thrower, cobbled together out of spare bits!
that's about 125 points towards the April Tale of OG gamers already!!
If I ask about crew will you be upset?
I've not really been on the forum for a while but it looks like you've made some serious progress on the CW! The command models from the unit (2nd April post) are, as Richie pointed out, a pretty character full bunch. The paint job really pulls that out of them, this army is going to look so great.
Will you be adding shields to the unit? It would seem a shame to obscure any of the detail (I just have it in my mind they'd just be eyes and a big hats peeking over the top).
cheers rich! I'm still working on the crew for the war machines
The big hats will be getting shields at some point, they'll be having the same ones as the champion, I've just ordered them from Hasslefree.
just another quick update, just finished these tonight. Two more sneaky gits:
now on 137 points for this month already!
Sneaky Gits. I remember those buggers! Cancelled out regular Greenskin animosity as no one trusted them. One allied unit was one of the cheesy Greenskin moves, back in the day. Hide em away and you were chuckling. Sweet models Lee!
Another quick update, just finished this guy. It's a hero model from Twisted Tales (part of Hasslefree Miniatures). I'll be using this guy as an additional crew member for the war machines at exeter.
latest update, the two crew for my death rocket wachine

Its the Helblaster/Rocket Battery Set actually Lee. Good conversions and paint jobs as always. What else you got planned for the CD army?
many more things John, many more things...
:hat2:
another update, I've just finished 4 extra wolf riders and I've realised there's no pics of the initial 6 wolf riders. So here's all 10 of my wolf riders
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/all102.jpg)
and my favourite two
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/favourite2.jpg)
Good stuff love the poses (and the fact they are quite easy to kill in battle unlike your Sneaky Gits!!!)
lovely mate, I enjoyed shoving my spirit hosts in their faces :smileyemoticons:
another quick update, here's a blunderbuss armed chaos dwarf I painted just before the Exeter Legionary tourney.
It's from Twisted Tales, which i sold through Hasslefree Miniatures
Here's just a quick thing I've painted up, it's a sorceror from Hasslefree Miniatures
(http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii245/maelzch/Chaos%20Dwarfs/Sorceror.jpg)
I love that - he look so good in that cloak, good job with the black cloak.
Not seen this plog for a while and really impressed with what I've missed. As others have said, really love the your command squad. Faces are excellent. What's on the painting table for the CD at the moment mate?
there's a smattering of bull centaurs on the painting/converting table atm, taking a while!
I've just finished this off today, a Bull Centaur Hero

Oooh, that's pretty/ugly. In a good way I mean.
I'm thinking - chaos knight horsey and shield, black orc body and axe arm, lots of green stuff, and - not sure about the helmet / mask - knight shoulder pad carved out?
Anyway, really nice. Looking forward to facing a full unit of these bad boys.
Close, the arms are from the old multi-piece chaos warriors, the mask is from the 40k defiler.
The whole unit's been put back for a bit, tinkering with skaven atm! The BC lord may be done soon though
Brilliant work and a lovely paint job too. Looking forward to seeing the full unit.
Fantastic Lee. I think that's my favourite miniature that you've painted so far. Keep up the great work!
Very nice mate, keep it up....
Arise, long dead topic, arise!

and you thought they'd gone away! :hat2:
Lovely mate, quite lovely. Verdigris on the armour is a lovely touch.
bloody hell he is a big bugger!!!!
Is that a troll upper body? How is the balance, is it a little top heavy?
Lovely model, and massive. Though I think I spy a Minotaur on the top half, where's the Chaos head from?
the head is from a 40k defiler
Torso? Troll or Mino???

Well, it would appear it has already captured Lee, and Ol, and Mike......
Hmmmmm they have all gone soft in my absence!!!

You always seem to play the curve ball. What, no Chaos Dwarves in 40k, you never let it stop you in fantasy. Chaos squats ftw!!!!!
curve ball is probably the best way to describe my army selection process!
Very very nice buddy, he is a big bugger, scary :))
We wants more Lee, give us more Chaos Dwarf goodness!!
Who's Lee. This section is all about Matt now
Perhaps I should roll all my plogs into one and employ some to write funny updates in an attempt to rival matt? (or I could just paint some more, y'know?)

That sounds like a challenge to me, bring it on! :fighting03:
(P.S. I suspect there will be lots more updates when Forge World churn out those Chaos Dwarfs!)
The problem I have whenever I try to start a blog up is that it seems to become cynical and bitter, and I can't go being accused of plagarism now can I?

I don't know what you mean  in fairness I doubt I can lay claim to be the first person to become cynical and bitter!
Put up piccies of the Mansions Figures buddy, I want people to see how good they are in the first place (for a boardgame mini) and then your ace paint jobs...
I will do mate, once I finish the final figure!
Been a while since I've put stuff up here, here's a Llamasu

Is he going to be a gyro at Valhalla?
Indeed, along with my Taurus!

Have you let them know, as the new regime in place now in packs are quite strict on proxies....
Should be fine mate, not exactly gonna be top tables!
Looks amazing!
The Dawi Zharr Immortals march to war on Valhalla! Just finished off this unit of 36 Ironbreakers, will be using a block of 30 at Valhalla next week (still not sure why!) I need to finish off a load of shields for them though.

Man-o-war???
cookie for Stevo!
All looking good dude... It might be just the pic but are the metals a bit greener than your other stuff?
I think it's a combination of both mate, they have come out a bit greener, but the camera seems to have amplified that.
Just got the 'crew' for my second Gyrocopter to paint for Valhalla now (that and move trays)
They are looking awesome for speed painted. Very green though. Revenge if the mouldy legion!!
the green might seem amplified due to the amount of armour on the models
Still they look awesome are you going for best painting at valhalla this weekend, and also why green ???
I highly doubt I'll get anywhere near best painted at Valhalla!
The green metal is my take on verdigris. I'm thinking I may go back and do some parts of their armour with an 'accent' colour just to break up the GREEN!
Liking the magma - very shiny :)
another update! I've finished off the rider for my llamasu (or gyrocopter if you will)
I also realised that I haven't put any photos of the Taurus rider up yet either, so here he is:
and both together atop their winged steeds!

Love the new additions Lee, really well painted and since they are two of my favourite models, they were always going to be a big hit for me.
However please don't come last at Valhalla, as the wooden spoon is by rights mine, even if I'm not attending the tournament :cool3:
Looking good, lets just hope Tamurkhan gets accepted as a normal tourney list so you can use them as what they're meant to be.
huzzah!
Wow!!! These look absolutely amazing, though the lettering on the middle one could do with a bit of a steadier hand.
All looking totally awesome. Bull centaur hero  would love a game against your chaos dwarf list sometime. Happy to take a no magic list to compensate for the power imbalance.
Once I get hold of the Tamurkhan book, I'll be looking for many games with the Dawi Zharr. Not to worry about magic andrew, the chaos dwarfs have their own magic users!
