Thursday 16th December - Forgotten Special Characters Advent Calendar

Right I'll try and be on time today, here's Day 16's Special Character and I think someone in the group may approve – that's all I'm saying – though there's not much suspense as all you have to do is open the spoiler to find out:
December 16th: Astrogoth

Name: Astrogoth, High Priest of Hashut (or technically High Priestof Hashut as the typo in the book says!)

Original Points Cost: 358 points

Background: Astrogoth is the oldest living Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer, so old his body has started to turn to stone – that common aging problem you can't get sorted on the NHS. However his body has been replace by a mechanical construct made by his slaves, what everyone wants for Christmas.

Original Appearance: White Dwarf Presents: Warhammer Armies: Chaos Dwarfs – 4th Edition, which for those of you too young to remember (god I hate you) was a compilation of a series of White Dwarf articles.

Last Appearance: Warhammer Armies: Chaos Dwarfs – 4th Edition.

Special Rules: Astrogoth is a Level 4 Sorcerer with four Chaos Dwarf spells (remember them people – lava and magma and stuff). His mechanical body gives him a 3+ armour save but means he can't ride a monster. Astrogoth cannot move faster than his move of 6" to either march or charge (except to flee or pursue) – well you wouldn't want a Dwarf moving faster than 6" with you. If all three of Astrogoth's Attacks hit the same target, he can immediately strike all the blows again against the same target.

My Memories of the Character: Think this was the only Chaos Dwarf special character model, queue everyone desperately replies to correct me. And as one of my regular opponents of the time, it was nice to have some characterful creatures in the army, and someone slower than the blasted Bull Centaur and Lammasu chasing me round the board!

Person(s) most Reminds Me Of: Bruce Forsyth he's old, and has all the personality of an artificial, mechanical robot – oh no sorry that's Tess Daly I'm thinking off!

Inclusion in 8th Edition: I could, but I'd need to make up rules for a whole army to go with it, and I have better things to do with my time – it may not appear that way but I do. But you never know what will come out of Forgeworld next year, who knows you may be able to pick up a new Astrogoth model for a mere £250 in the summer?

Many thanks to Mr Shaky Shaky, my Wood Elf painting friend from earlier in this blog, for lending me the book and providing the photograph of Astrogoth.

Good work Mat, I was gonna start an angry rant about people not doing things on time when I have payed nothing for it in the first place and its all for love of the game. But then I realised this isn't a tourney comp thread...  :))

I think I can happily state that I have never once in 15 years played a Chaos Dwarf army... silly little buggers.

As for Imrik,  my favourite Helf Special Character, I think he was pretty much the red headed step child of the Helf characters. I mean all his magic items are just given to any Helf character who wants them. No special magic items for you!!
There is no problem in life that can't be solved with Heroic Killing Blow:
Plague Furnace, Abomination, Hydra, Wyvern, Arachnarok, Engine of the Gods, Zombie Dragon, Vargulf, Hellcannon. To be continued...

If we assume that there are infinite universes, then in at least one of them, I'm banging Emma Watson. Awesome!

@matt - I approve of today's character! The character was included in the fan-made Indy GT Dwafs of Chaos book too.

@james - we'll have to amend you not having played the chaos dwarfs before!

Bloody hell I was only two minutes late, I wouldn't have even been late if I was a train!  :wink;m::

I'm a big fan too, think he may end up in my High Elf Army - although at 200 points a month might be sometime in 2016. Hmmm.

Thought you'd approve! Unofficial rules! In this blog, how dare you, I have integrity here to preserve! Can't you tell!

I felt the need to register on the forum just to protest at the constant references to a "Mr Shaky Shaky".

<Protest!!>

There we go...

and also to comment on how hilarious Matt's blog is, as always.  I was tempted to take some pictures of the old special characters that came from the 5th (?) edition boxed set where GW couldn't afford the plastic minatures and you had to resort to their cardboard pictures..

I am hoping to come with Matt to one of your gaming nights (just to watch him lose spectacularly!), and I think if Santa is kind I may well have a new army that I can paint (hopefully more successfully than the incredibly slow rate I have been doing my Wood Elf army!) and write a fascinating blog on the life and times of Mr Shaky Shaky...!

I've played them twice.  Once at the ETC clash of the gash and once at the ETC 6 nations practice tournament.  Both times they came out as spectacular draws.  Though in the clash of the gash it took a bit of work to pull it back as he had a 3 shot to 1 lead for most of the game as his stuff moved faster and I only got parity of the drinks in the last turn (oh and we drew on vps too).

Hey Mr Shaky Shaky has joined the forum!  That's not his real name, I'll get in trouble now, it's just he used to be a bit shaky when painting, but I've got some pictures of his Wood Elves and they look very good! Glad to have you on board.

Ahh the card Eltharion and card Grom the Paunch, I think there was a card Bolt Thrower, Rock Lobba and Orc Shaman on Wyvern too - scary as they were. Sadly both characters are still in existence otherwise they'd definitely make the Advent Calendar.

First of all, as I think everyone on this forum will tell you I'm an amazing Warhammer player and have let to lose a game at OG so far.  Perhaps I exaggerate slightly.

Secondly you will have to come down to the gaming night, as I think people suspect I invented you in the blog as a work of fiction (like the resident 4 year old artist), so now it looks like I've created a fictious log in and am having a conversation with myself. In fairness compared to a lot of this blog, this wouldn't be that bizarre.

Hmmm depends, I hear Santa's sick and tired of bloody wrapping up presents this year. Stupid things. Though you better not try and rival this blog, else there'll be trouble!!

Friday 17th December - Forgotten Special Characters Advent Calendar

This time next week it will be Christmas Eve, bloody hell, hope you're ready, done your shopping, wrapped your pressies, posted your cards, come up with 8 more characters for the calendar. So much to do, here's Door number 17:
December 17th: Golgfag

Name: Golgfag

Original Points Cost: 285 points in the 6th edition for Golgfag and three Ogres including Skalf the Standard Bearer and Unnamed the Horn Blower, but in the 5th edition you ask, twiddles thumbs, do-do-doo, don't have the book.

Background: Golgfag switched sides between the Orcs of Gnashrak Badtooth and the Dwarfs of Ungrim Ironfist in a fight, after a disagreement over payment and in fact fought his way out with Gnashrak's severed arm. The Ogre band became famous mercenaries fighting many battles with the Bretonnians, and Gnashrak even ate Skalf's leg after being imprisoned by the Dwarfs. He then went onto to a pop career releasing Halleluiah to be Christmas Number One and was team captain on Series 3 of Hole in the Wall – may have made that last bit up, don't have the book!

Original Appearance: Warhammer Armies: Dogs of War – 5th Edition

(and released in White Dwarf 226, where I got all the info from!)

Last Appearance: Updated rules in White Dwarf 252 for 6th Edition.

Sadly they never made Warhammer Armies: Ogre Kingdoms

Best I can do for an Ogre Kingdoms character I'm afraid, only one book means no one can be forgotten you see!

Special Rules: They caused Fear. That's it. Could be hired by anyone except the Bretonnians – those notoriously cheap Knights!

My Memories of the Character: None, never had Dogs of War or played when they were around. Heard of Ungrim Ironfist though, does that count?

Person(s) most Reminds Me Of: The famous leg-eating Mitchell brother... I don't know, he doesn't remind me of any one in real life he's an Ogre. Oh maybe Shrek! Love that film, and 2, but not 3 not so good.

Inclusion in 8th Edition: Yes very complex special rules - they'd cause Fear.
P.S. I'm off to panto tonight "Oh no you're not" I hear you cry, well you're wrong I am off to panto tonight on overnight trip to Basildon – could it be more showbiz? So tomorrow's Advent Calendar will be a little late, sorry in advance!

I can dig out the 5th edition DoW book to let you know the points if you want.

Golgfag was mentioned in the Ogre Kingdoms book, and I think he was a character back in 4th edition too
