Does the shape of the base make a huge difference? Outside of competitive play will it be such a big thing that everyone will need to buy new bases for entire armies?

Lapping round was 4th and 5th, it was dropped for 6th. Big change I remember going into 6th was that you now needed a rank of 5 models to have a rank bonus, where previously it had been four only.  That and magic was diced based and no more cards.

5 models to a rank was 7th. As was the death of lapping round, as I remember (but only ~95% sure on that one). First incarnation of dice-based magic was 6th, though.

Absolutely depends on the shape the rules take.

I thought Lapping round was in 6th think I remember doing it with my Empire Spearmen back in the day (I know Spearmen....). 7th and 7.5 was the worst period of Warhammer for me by far, 3 Armies which were so OP that the rest stood no chance, I virtually gave up in 7th and then restarted in 8th.

I'll have to check my sixth edition rule, I thought those changes came in then.

6th had lapping and 4 to a rank Andy, you are getting confused in your old age  :wink;m::

That was the fault of the army books not the Edition. But yes it was not great facing 146 identikit Kairos Doc armies at the GT Final, or dying of boredom being shot to half strength by fleeing Xbow wielding Dark Elves, by God that era was dull...
But rules wise 7th was so much better than the awful skill free nonsense that is 8th with moving and shooting cannons and 6 dice skill free magic......
And for a while at least it looked like the edition would have balance, but then Ogres started the great power creep that they so love, interweaves with atrocious books like LM. Very odd....

Although the moving cannons is nonsense the tournaments that I would go to these days are the ones with comp packs which has max 5 dice per cast and 4 for death. Without those two I enjoy it much more.

Berimbolo

Yeah think that helps massively and if you at it the Tournament scene is thriving, lots of tournaments are getting big numbers. For sure I get your point on the Magic and the Chariot Cannons but a few tweaks then I think 8th would be top notch.

Lots of tournaments got big numbers years ago Jack, I know cause I was there...
Actually lots of tournaments now are struggling or have gone, the ones that are left do well of course as there is less completion or choice, 3/4 years ago, I could go to an event every weekend, and for one year I nearly did, 40 in a year nearly killed me..

The game has lost a lot of players, old and new due to the plethora of new games out there..
Xwing alone has taken a huge chunk out of the GW fan base...

If you still enjoy the game, then fine, and I'm sure the 8th Ed system will run for a few years no matter what the horrors of 9th bring..
But their days of being top dog are well and truly over, far too much competition out there, with equally good minis, better rules and waaaaay cheaper. One big reason many industry experts predicted WFB turning into a skirmish game, lower model count attracts way more customers....

I am getting old, thought it was 6th. Army selection and Magic were massively changed for 6th, I remember that. Empire and Orcs and Goblins lost quite a few units as well. Flying high was dumped as well.
