As a club we have always played a wide variety of things. As we need to start thinking about what we will focus on and what events we should run to try and get greater participation I though a poll was in order.

I know Ol has his ideas about want systems should take priority but what do the members want?

One of the options I selected was other, to represent narrative 40k gaming as in, more story and fluff orientated 40k. I find the word campaign is very misleading as in the recent campaign we still got a fair few tournie style lists and that put me off continuing.

I think the difference between campaign and narrative is often mistaken. We hit the right spot with pip running the fantasy campaign. It wasn't comped but everyone knew that the idea was not to bring something good but something with a theme etc and nonsense lists were thrown away but the way pip ran the campaign contributed to fair fun was imperative.

The only thing I would say is some people want to play 40k and some people want to play narrative games so the crossover of these two goals decreases. That's why games like inquisitor failed because it catered only to that narrow group of people who wanted both

I'm aware that Pip ran a great wfb recently, achieved a good balance and that wfb players are looking forward to the follow up. That, however, doesn't mean that the two always go in hand with one another. I think it's an increasingly important distinction to make with 40k over fantasy due the the range of data slates, supplements, allies etc in the game at present.

To avoid getting off the topic of the original post is that I'd like to play 40k in that way down the club, but haven't been playing it at all since the autumn. The point of this post is for people to state what they'd like to play. If no one else wants to play that style of 40k, I'm more than happy to carry on spending my gaming time on board games instead.

The main point of this thread was to test opinion and guage ionterest in various systems - if enough people fancy a narrative 40k type thing I'm sure it can be catered for with a bit of thought

I think the interest in fluff 40k is very ltd in the club, hence the campaign did not really work, some of the codecs are so good that no amount of comp will avoid them winning 99.9% of the time..
Crons and both elves for instance..
Hence the reason Alex found it v hard to get any opponents who wanted to play him...
The game is bascially broken and is getting worse, hence the reason I stopped playing it...
I know Oliver is always up for fun 40k, and there might be a few more, but I doubt enough to make another campaign work, narrative or not...

Just to stick my ore in: I'd actually like to play 40k on a narrative level, but I find that the main game just isn't particularly conducive to it - despite having some great fluff behind it (as opposed to Fantasy where I'm not a massive fan of the fluff, but find the game works better for narrative gameplay).

Maybe it's something that could be helped by playing smaller squad-based games rather than the current bloated 'mass-skirmish' style? Either way, I'd be happy to give it a go - I'd just need something other than Daemons, though I am putting together an Inquisition Kill Team/skirmish force anyway for the model's sake.

Pip

If the problem with 40K at the club at the moment is a crop of bad codexes, then to me it seems like the simplest fix from a narrative perspective is to limit which armies participate. Avoid the usual "everyone in the galaxy turns up to fight over Planet X" thing and just choose a handful of factions depending on what models people have available, excluding the big offenders.

I remember that before I left for Japan 40K seemed to be really taking off at the club, and if I could find the hobby time I'd have jumped at the chance to resurrect my old 'Nids.

Let's all start playing Warzone Resurrection. Seriously.

I personally miss playing 40k at the club now. I think it's worth reiterating that you make the games what you want them to be, not what the interwebz and supposed "meta" tells you it should be. Yes, there's a lot of new info out there (data slates, supplements etc), but more variety should actually make it easier to create a game, campaign, narrative or whatever, that many can be happy with.

It would be great to see 40k return to popularity at the club (not at the expense of other stuff of course), because there appear to be peeps at the club who still want to play, even if there are some who plainly don't like it any more.
