Title: Top 5 / Worst 5 Movies
Post by: fatolaf on May 29, 2009, 06:23:29 pm
In no particular order, what are your top 5..?
They dont have to be good, or even ones you watch a lot, they can be cheesy, you just have to love them for whatever reason...

Mine are

1) Shawshank Redemption
2) Blade Runner (all 3 versions)
3) Ferris Bueller's Day Off
4) Salute of the Jugger
5) Notting Hill

And what are your worst 5?   :bash;m:
The ones that really annoy you, or the ones you simply think are crap

Mine are (amongst many, many others)

1) Titanic
2) Anything and I mean anything to do with the latest 3 star wars
3) Oceans 12
4) Pretty much any Tom Hanks Movie since Big..
5) Any Spielberg movie since Raiders...

Hmmm, top 5 and bottom 5 change with my mood, but here is a sample;

Top-
Star Wars
Rashomon
Throne Of Blood
Metropolis
Beauty and the Beast (yes, the Disney one!)

Bottom-
Frankie and Johnny
Grease
Love Actually
Mary Poppins
Mama Mia (possibly unfair as I have not seen it, but the stage play was so bad and every clip looks worse!)

I reserve the right to change / deny all knowledge of these lists as my mood suits!  :army;m:

Me Mrs went with her mum and sister to see it and I asked her
'Was is so bad that it was good?'
'No' she said, 'it was so bad, they all walked out after half an hour'

Nuff said me thinks

This is as it stands at the moment, but the top list is a lot longer than five films. Not keen on trying to narrow it down to a small list, but I'll try:

Top 5

Horror Hospital
Curse of Frankenstein (1957 version)
School for Soundrels (Terry Thomas version)
Plein Soleil
Enter the Dragon

Quatermass and the Pit is missed out, because I can't decide whether the BBC or Hammer version is best.

Bottom 5

Any Hollywood remake of one of my beloved films (Wicker Man, Soundrels, that Psycho remake - why bother?)
The Wisdom of Crocodiles (Truly awful. Took about three years and the reading of a review before I worked out what was going on)
Die Another Day (Invisible car?)
Chicago (Never, ever, again. And I've had to suffer the stage version to boot)
Creep (essentially ripped off Deathline, but removed all of the humour, horror and good bits in doing so)

Rich - ever seen Yojimbo? I prefer that over the two you've listed.

I Have seen yojimbo, didn't like it as much as the ones mentioned as I guess I like my Jideki-ki heroes to be a little more flawed, it is a fantastic film and even one where the remake was a quality film!

I just love the narrative structure of Rashomon and how dark a mirror of the human condition it presents in an entertaining way. Throne of blood is there because of my weakness for Macbeth, probably my favourite telling of the story. That said, apart form Rhapsody in Autumn any Kurosawa film could make it into the top 5 at some point!

Throne of Blood scared the holy crap out of the wife. I think it's due to the ghosts having more of a resonance for her.

Have to have Yojimbo as no.1 in my book - especially when it all kicks off at the end. Oh, and the bit when he arrives in the village and the dog comes running down the street!

Yes, it is difficult for the western viewer to fully understand the cultural significance of changing the witches to ghosts, a theme he revisits in Rashomon.

It was just outside Kyoto. Rashomon isn't a Toho film, as they didn't want to take the risk of making it.

I didn't know it had been filmed outside Toho until I was walking along the poster gallery and it was there.

Ahhh, John, good to see you too dislike love actually, but seem to think it is better than I am Legend!  00O Also I note that Ol has Notting Hill in his top, which in my book is almost as bad as the hateful one! My down on Hugh Grant seems to be comperable to Johns for John Travolta!

But notable with Johns favourites, not much love or fluffy stuff in there, you should save your bloodthirsty side for the games John! :smokinglb:

Worst Films

4. The Punisher (John Travolta one)

I kinda like this film, but i know i shouldnt!

Mine are:
Top 5
Baseketball
Anchorman
Shaun of the Dead
Pulp fiction
Fight club

bottom 5[/]
1) Any Harry Potter film - vile dirge, especially the latest one
2) The incredible Hulk (not the Edward Norton one, the Ang Lee one. Epicfail!)
I cant really think of any other films i dislike enough to put on this list.

I didnt like X3 either, but that was cause they were a bit inaccurate with characters + they didnt put gambit in the film!

lol. Ancorman is quite good. Like dodgeball.

I like the bit when they have just had the street fight and are in the meeting afterwards.

Road Trip is a great film, don't knock it. The new wolverine film has gambit in, don't know why he was left out of X3, although i do like the Xmen series.

Gambit was in the original script for X3, they wanted the guy who played sawyer in lost to play gambit. He then pulled out and gambit was cut from the script  :nutzo:
There was a nod to him in X2, when theyre looking at the database of mutants, on of the scrrens they breifly bring up has the name 'Remy LeBeau' at the top (gambit for those who dont know)

The worst, most ghastly and yet strangely compelling piece of viewing i've ever had the fortune of seeing.

I shall now attempt to watch such delights as Shark vs Octopus and Zombie vs Shark.

1. Godfather
2. You Have Got Mail
3. How to Train Your Dragon
4. Many of Miyazaki movies
5. The Raid Redemption

Worst 5 would be -

1. Pirates of the Caribbean
2. The Ring (Hollywood version)
3. Resident Evil
4. Any of the zombie movies
5. Hangover 2 (absolutely hated it!)

Oh man I only just noticed this thread! There's too many good films and bad films to list so I sorta picked a few....but here goes:

Good Times:

1. Donnie Darko/The Station Agent/Clerks 1,2/Chasing Amy
2. Heat/Godfather/The Departed
3. Toy Story 1,2,3/UP/Spirited Away/My Neighbour Totoro
4. Reservoir Dogs/Wolf of Wall Street
5. Zombieland/Social Network/Superbad

Bad Times:

1. Any of the Transformers films made by Michael Bay
2. Xmen: Wolverine
3. Spiderman 3
4. Jersey Girl
5. Any film made by Tyler Perry

The bad ones were a lot harder than I thought because I've seen tons of terribad films but not soooooo bad that they would be on a Top 5 list or films that are known to be utter dross that I just won't watch.

-Urgh- changes everyday... but for today we'll say:

Top 5

- Anchorman
- Enter the Dragon
- Where Eagles Dare
- Matrix (all 3)
- 300

(Mentions: 13th Warrior, Snatch, Raider of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Miller's Crossing, Smokey and the Bandit, Saving Private Ryan, 39 Steps, Sherlock Holmes (both), Ferris Beuller's Day Off, Waterloo, LotR RotK, Last Samurai (lol, I know), Bugsy Malone, The Sting, Man on Fire, Clue, Michael Clayton, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... I should stop now)

Worst 5

- Grease (any and all of them)
- Mermaids (whyyyy make me sit through that!!)
- Spider Man (any of them from and after Toby Maquire -bleh-)
- Star Wars, Phantom Menace (lots of cool, but lots of utter shite)
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service (George... just no)

Not enough minutes left in my life to list the other shite films I've seen...

Superbad!

Those kind of films appeal to me, I can understand why people don't like them though, come on though you've got Notting Hill in your top 5!

Also what about Saving Private Ryan, Captain Phillips and Toy Story ALL great Tom Hanks films, admittedly there's plenty of dross but I can forgive him.

Comedies also appeal to me, it's my favourite genre, Superbad was not funny, it depressed the hell out of me, a bit like the 2nd Jump Street movie, which was woeful compared to the first...

Notting hill appeal to the old romantic in me, and Rhyss Evans steals the movie, I know it's cheese, but it's harmless....

I will chip in with my top 5. Bottom 5 is impossible as there are far too many films I hated:

LOTR: Two Towers
The Matrix
Das Boot
Pulp Fiction
Terminator 2

Honorable mentions go to:

The Godafather
The Departed
Requiem for a Dream
Guardians of the Galaxy

I think that is purely a generation thing, pardon the pun, plus the fact they went and remade it for no reason what so ever. The 80's now seem to be deemed old enough to plunder for remakes for the 16-25 US market who will never watch/read or listen to anything made before they were born...

The remake of Robocop so far has to be the biggest Turkey out of the 80's plunder, totally did not get the the concept of the original (ie the humour) and then making it totally non violent to lower the certificate..awful.

Tough question this. At a push I'd go for (in no particular order)

* Interview with the vampire
* Gettysburg
* The Imitation Game
* Gladiator
* Tora Tora Tora

I won't do bottom 5 as they have been so many shocking films but I would say I['m surprised at the mention of 300. As a film about the same thing '300 Spartans' is, in my view, far better.

That's the second time you called me an old duffer Ol!!! I agree with you on the remake thing, for the most part they are unnecessary and the new version is not very good. However, some are truly exceptional like John Carpenter's the Thing, or the recent Batman trilogy.

Top Five for me

John Carpenters The Thing
The Dark Knight
Blade Runner
Terminator 2
Downfall

Honourable mentions, the Terminator, the Watchmen, the World's End. Hot Fuzz, Empire Strikes Back, Spiderman (2002), the English Patient and Doctor Zhivago.

Bottom Five (one's I've seen)

World War Z
Man of Steel
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
Spiderman 3

These films for me were both real let downs and just poorly made/corney. Dishonourable mention to Prometheus, X-Men Last Stand, 300, and  Terminator 3 and 4 which are jsut poor in comparison to the first two.

Top five:

Jurassic Park
The Man Who Would Be King
Doctor Strangelove
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (not necessarily an amazing film but it has PRETTY BOATS)
Up (although there are a lot of Pixar films you could put here).

Don't have a bottom five, have seen lots of execrable films but have never bothered to rank them.
